  • SIM COMPLETE - 1987 - Offseason 4

    Next sim: Friday (noon ET)

Free Agency has begun. Reminder that Friday's sim will be run during the day (around lunchtime)

Sorry about the weird transaction logs for the Rule 5. The draft list feature in OOTP might be least intuitive thing I've ever seen. It took me a couple tries before I realized the draft list is only relevant for one round and needs to be copied to every round for it to take effect.

Wanna give a shout out to our franchises 1st ever draft pick Niclas "Dinosaur" Arce. Arce was always a very good player and even won a Stout Slugger award, but could never seem to be that superstar player we envisioned. At 34 with no interest the young old man hung 'em up. Thanks for the memories Nicolas.

Well, we didn't lose anyone in the draft, but we didn't get anyone either. I really like that first pick of yours Clay.

I figured he's be the 1st pick in the Rule V. So much so that I tried to trade Linty for him before Rule V but it was too late. Shocked I got him.

I don't see the universal appeal in Phillips. Had a nice year at AA last year, but can you really expect him to contribute this year Clay? You're poised for a run. He might be serviceable in 2 years, but for now, seems like at best a AAAA type guy to me.

Lost a couple guys, C Hector Cabrera and 3B Elijah Cook. Both of them might be decent but it'll be hard to keep them on the BLB roster for the entire year. Good luck to them in Dallas and Morgantown.

Picked up OF Pepe Rodriguez. Probably a AAAA guy as well, but I need power and he's got power according to OSA and my scout. I'm guessing he's just a pipedream by me as usual though.

A switch hitting backup catcher that is good defensively and is 23... plus I paid nothing for him. To me... even if he's nothing more than a backup to Hernando and eventually Ruiz. he's a great option and a much better choice than a 34 year old scrub that I was using in the role.

                  Free agency is tempting

Got my Rule V pick- Brad Byers, 1B. Not going to be a stud but could be a nice power bat off the bench. Ratings are pretty good already according to my scout. Doug West hits for some power but a .290 OBP at 1B just is not going to cut it. Realistically, these guys are holding 1B warm until Castor develops (which probably will be a long time!)

Plus, he's a top 50 prospect with a great eye. I had no plans on losing him... I just wasn't paying attention to who was Rule V eligible.

                    Clay got a great player.

He's got power. I was hoping no one would pick him up after I realized I left him out there. If he can make enough contact at the BLB level he could turn into a good player. But I have concerns he'll never get on base enough to make his power worth keeping in the lineup. I'll be watching.

As for Phillips, I think it's a steal for Clay. He was on my list (that I didn't submit, come to think of it) along with one other player who also got taken. At least both would have been gone before my pick anyway. But Phillips looks like a future starter for sure who can definitely contribute this year at least as a backup. Very nice addition to Clay's team.

I always lose someone in this thing due to not paying attention/not thinking anyone will take them. Errol Blue didn't work out in Virginia but Duncan Riddleberger looks like a solid 2B for Mississippi.

I liked Phillips too- too bad I had a better record than Clay last season ;)

I remember everyone being hot for Blue when he was in the Rule V draft. I thought he was a sure fire back end of the bullpen type pitcher. For some reason, he just didn't pan out.

Relievers are tough to predict in this game.

I really liked the Phillips pickup by Virginia and was shocked he fell that far. He's good enough defensively to serve as a backup for a year or two and I think afterwards will be good enough to start.

I'm pretty happy with Maine's pickup of Jed Lynch. Not a top prospect but he put up some nice numbers in AAA last year. We're pretty thin in the OF with McGuire injured for the first couple months. Lynch runs well, fields well and can play all three OF positions. He'll be a solid 4th or 5th OF for us.
