There's a story about Larry Bird that says he once walked into the locker room during the NBA All-Star Weekend just before the Three-Point contest and asked, "So which one of you guys is going to come in 2nd?" The same story could be written about this year's IL Pale Ale race. Rookie Conan 'Checkmate' Wilkerson, the 4th overall pick just last season, took his 14 games of professional experience and shocked the world in 1987. The burly kid from Mexico City put out one of the most impressive first seasons in BLB history, going 16-4 while notching 24 of 30 Quality Starts. This from a youngster that was supposedly on a pitchcount and inning limit.

One GM, speaking under the promise of anonymity said, "I'd like to see this guy's Birth Certificate. I've never seen a 22 year old who never even spent an hour in AAA pitch with this kind of confidence. And he was the 4th pick last season! How does he fall to 4? Stud."

Wilkerson continued his fairy tale season by going 2-1 with a 1.16 ERA during the Kodiak's run to their first ever Brewmaster's Cup.

Reading almost like a list of "also rans" the Top 3 was rounded out by Washington's Russ McEvoy and mainstay Joe 'Bluto' Aurillo from Philly. Perhaps the biggest suprise, however, was the one first place vote that did not go to Conan. Dunmore Theodore from Windy City grabbed one first place vote despite only appearing on a total of 3 ballots.
    The Great One!

I thought Carillo deserved to be in the top three, but Wilkerson was the Pale Ale Pitcher all the way.

Not to argue over it, but I'd love to see the reasoning behind Theodore over him. Actually, I'd like to see the reasoning behind Theodore over McEvoy and Aurillo (and Carillo if you want to just argue with me)

You might try asking the guy who picked O'Hegerty over Padilla for third in the best hitter award. He could probably construct an argument for you.

Not my fault! I didn't vote for any of my bums.

Hey, I can back it up with no problem. I actually already did in that thread.

Oh was that you? Sorry about that.

It is interesting how individuals can see things so differently that we don't even understand each other. In the case of Theodore, whom I may have chosen for third, over Carillo, I notice that Theodore had more wins, fewer losses, more IPs, lower ERA, fewer HRs per IP and higher VORP and don't even understand what the argument could possibly be for Carillo over Theodore.

Plus, as I recall, puke'n Carillo lost the All Star Game costing me some $. Come to think of it, that is probably why you prefer him. What went out of my pocket went directly into yours.

What I saw was two pitchers that were both capable of finishing with the same record. So I canceled out the 14-12 and the 16-7. They had similar ERAs at 2.86 and 2.97. I won't compare that. It's essentially the same pitcher and I can't see how an ERA of 0.11 would equal 2 less wins and 5 more losses. Seems to be it's more hard breaks. So I went deeper.

Theodore threw more innings, so it's possible that Carillo lost games because of his bullpen. I admit I didn't double check. But, what I liked was that Carillo had a far better H/9, WHIP, K/9 compared to Theodore. Theodore had more K's (5 more to be exact) but also threw 28 more innings.

That was my reasoning. I saw Carillo being far more dominant and more unlucky.

Yeah well, Carillo still lost the All Star Game. He's not likely to get my vote for anything after that.

Haha, I get it. I might use that money on a pitcher to fill my staff.

Yeah... that lost $100,000 would have only put you $14.0 in the hole instead of $14.1.
