And there it is. The injuries pile on.

Not sure how this team will deal with losing another outfielder and now being without another key infielder for a month. Going to be a very tough 2 week stretch until certain players return.

Both the IL Pitcher and Hitter of the Month were dealt.

4-3 sim for the Tobs as we continue to play better.

I forgot to mention how weird it is to see Buzzell's name in different colors than black and gold...I had a dynasty dammit :(

4 game lead over Maine, and the 2nd best record in the league. Dallyn didn't get to pitch, stupid 7 day lineups, but everyone is looking pretty good. With Maine's moves and us getting another arm (plus Donegan back in 3 weeks), I hope to be in good shape for the playoffs.

              5-2

              3-0 vs. Baltimore
              2-2 vs. Cali

              Good

              - Really...5-2 after I trade away half my team in the last month. We hit .268 and had an ERA of 2.14 for the week.
              - 1B Finbow is playing well...such a waste to keep in AAA all that time.
              - Our pitchers had 57 K's and 24 BB's.
              - My AA and A team are in 1st place
              - My 1st 3 picks in the draft had some nice ratings bumps.

              Bad

              - My offense is a strikeout machine. This week 58 K's to 13 BB's.
              - The fan interest is now 51 and the fans attendance has dropped.

I guess the real news yesterday was not the sim but the trade deadline activity. Some were predicting a quiet day and for awhile those that did appeared to be right, but a flurry of last minute deals proved them wrong. I'll be commenting during the day on several of the trades but will start with the deal that didn't get done.

I am not sure what is going on in Wilmington but the team seemed to have as much incentive to deal Alonzo Gugierrez as any of the sellers and judging by the deals that did get done, there was a lot of interest from contenders in adding front-end starting pitching. Perhaps Chubby has decided to resign Gugs, or maybe his asking price was just too high, but Gugierrez could have been the prize acquisition at the deadline.

Time will tell but it appears that Wilmington could be a team in serious decline.

                  Philadelphia Freedom (59 - 46, 1.0 GB)

                  6-1 Overall

Second straight 6-1 sim. We'll take winning 6 out of 7 on the road anytime. Picked up 3 games on division leader CAL and have opened a 4 game lead in the WC standings.

                  2-1 @ California

Gm 1 Greg Josey hit a three run HR in the first inning after a Harry Elliot error prolonged the inning. That was all the offense we managed, but it was also more than we needed. Nathan MacOwl, Trevor Broomfield and Joe Alveraz combined for the shutout.
                  PHI 3 CAL 0

Gm 2 Deadline acquisition Tim Nathan took the hill for the first time in a Freedom uniform and gave us exactly what we want/need from him: 7 strong innings and an all important W against the division leaders. Mel Woodbury and Desi Rochs each hit homeruns off of CAL starter Joe Lopez for all our runs.
                  PHI 3 CAL 2

Gm 3 Y. Kang wasn’t good, allowing 7ER in less than 5 IP and that was the end of the game.
                  PHI 1 CAL 7

We had a chance to sweep, but we’ll take 2 out of 3 from the division leaders on the road.

                  4-0 @ Baltimore

Gm 1 Greg Josey had his best game of the year going 3-4 2R 1HR 4RBI. SP Ray Minnoz was erratic walking 5 while allowing 6 hits, but BAL stranded 12 baserunners.
                  PHI 7 BAL 3

Gm 2 Joe Aurillo’s start was interrupted by a rain delay in the 4th inning, but he wasn’t off to that great of a start anyway (3.1 IP 2ER 3BB 3K). Greg Josey had his second straight good game 3-4 2R 1HR 2RBI. I hope this is finally a sign that he is heating up. The bullpen was good in relief of Aurillo allowing 1 ER in 5.2 IP.
                  PHI 5 BAL 4

Gm 3 2B Desi Rochs went 3-5 1HR 3 RBI and SS Geoof Scott returned from injury to hit his 4th HR and scored 2 runs. The bullpen was really good again going 4.2 innings without allowing a run on 2 hits.
                  PHI 7 BAL 4

Gm 4 With a chance to complete the sweep, Ray Minnoz took the hill on short rest (apparently 7 Day Lineups do not override the “Start highest rested starter” setting. 1st time this season I’ve had any issues while using the 7 Day Lineups). Fortunately, Minnoz was great allowing 2 hits in 6 innings.
                  PHI 2 BAL 0

                  Good:

Ray Minnoz - I don’t know where we would be without him. My scout hates him and he’s never experienced any success at the ML level, but he is 8-4 on the year with a 3.14 ERA. He’s 8-1 in his last 11 starts with an ERA around 2.50.

Bullpen (special mention Trevor Broomfield) - Threw 23.1 innings in 7 games and gave up 2 ER. Trevor Broomfield alone threw 7.1 innings without allowing a run.

Greg Josey - I’ve been tough on him all season for his lack of production. We need him in a big way. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come: .269/.387/.654/1.041 5 R 3HR 9 RBI 17 TB

                  Desi Rochs - .348/.400/.609/1.009 3R 2HR 6RBI 14TB

                  Mel Woodbury - .375/.516/.667/1.183 4R 1HR 3RBI 16TB 3SB

Ben Irvin - comes off the 60 day DL for next week.

                  Not as Good:

Yeong-suk Kang - Scuffling a bit, lost his 3rd straight decision. Allowed 7ER in 4.2 IP
                  Philly Freedom

                      Maine

Communications with Portland have just been restored and initial reports are that Guides GM Andrew Stevens has been hung in effigy in the streets of the city as a result of the deadline deals that sent long-time Guides Neto Bermeo to California and Eddie O'Fallon to Washington. Both players had been popular members of the team since the league's rebirth in 1978.

"Rhett Erickson? Anastasio Lazano? Who the hell are they", shouted one critic of the deal. "I have heard of this Joe Seirra at least, but I don't pay my good money to watch some Punch-and-Judy hitter hit little loopers over the head of the shortstop", he continued.

Stevens has been unavailable for comment but a spokesperson for his office commented on the reasoning behind the deals. "We're not one of those teams like California or Washington, who get a few good players together every once in a long long while and then put everthing that they have into winning one measly BLB championship", he explained. "We build dynasties in Maine, and these deals were necessary to prepare the ground for the next one".

Maine was just two games out of first in their division and only two back in the wild-card race at the time of the deal. Assistant BLB Commissioner Clay Shaver who has been a long-time critic of the tendancy of BLB teams to stand pat or rebuild instead of trying to win it all has yet to be heard from regarding these transactions, but the deal is bound to create new calls for incentives for teams to go for the glory. There have been uncofirmed that one of Shaver's top executives, possibly the Assistant to the Assistant BLB Commissioner himself, is furious about the deal. "This kind of thing can't go on", he is reported to have said, "the deal breaks new ground in the level of timidity displayed in this league and for us to remain viable it must be stopped".

I was cussing up a storm after Elliott botched the simple play and the next batter hit a three run bomb.

I only got angrier as the game went on and I realized that was all the runs either team would score.

                          California Kodiaks (60-45)

                          1-2 vs. Philadelphia
                          2-2 vs. Batavia

                          The Good
                          - Joe Toapanta and Conan Wilkerson. Both have been work horses for us this year. Wilkerson all but has the New Brew sown up and Toapanta has been a beast since returning from injury

                          - Harry Elliott, .412/.545/.588/1.133. Been great since I picked him up from Wilmington.

                          - Lucio Mendez hit .357 for the week. The reigning two time IL gold glove winner at SS is having another great year in the field and this year his bat is coming to play as well.

                          The Bad
                          - Last week I wrote this about my offense.

Hitting. As in, we've completely stopped hitting. The bats have just died in July. Hopefully it's only a one month deal. For the sim, .178/.263/.299/.562
Well, we didn't do much better this week with a .223/.294/.323/.617 line. July is over boys. Pick it the fuck up!

                          - Neto Bermeo. 4/23, .174/.240/.348/.588. Just no.

                          The Ugly but funny
                          - Saw 'The Ugly Truth' last night. Quite the funny date movie. Will be well worth the price of a DVD rental.

Next Week: 3 @ Carolina, 3 vs. Wilmington

You are correct sir. While I could look at work at offers, the Wildcat Front Office just didn't feel confident enough in their research abilities in the limited time frame.

Our goal now is to resign Gugz. He's been willing to negotiate, and seems to like Willmington, so we'll see how the future plays out.
