Virginia grabs their first (and possibly only) FA by signing with Xalbador 'Meter Man' Medine. Not expecting much out of the Vet, but he gives us some solid depth in the OF and a little more speed on the bases.

I'm pretty sure I offered him more money. I guess he didn't like sitting on the bench in Maine last season.
I didn't want to mess around. I have been a big fan of McEvoy over the years. My scout has him 5-5-7, thinks he is a legit ace. He is a workhorse (missed 5 starts since 1978) and he is in his prime. I went a million or two per year over his demands just because I didn't want to get into a bidding war for what I thought was the best FA SP we have had on the market...ever?
I may have outbid myself in the end, but I am really excited to have McEvoy in DC.
I also signed switch-hitting catcher Alan Star. I saw what he did in Baltimore and California, and after trading Uchiyama, I needed a backup C and 1B. He fills the void nicely with a 1-year deal.

I'm giving you shit like you do to me. I think the deal might be a bit long for him, my gut is he's starting his slip, but I could be wrong.
I'm a big believer in doing what you gotta do to get the guy you want though, whether that be FA dollars or trades. IF you wanted him, then good job getting him.
I always will have a soft spot for him anyway.

Haha. Well if our track record of "giving eachother shit" continues, McEvoy might win the Pale Ale the next two years.
Yeah, I think he may be starting to slip. OSA has him at 4-5-7 just recently. He had two significant arm injuries this season for the first time ever. And he will turn 33 this season, an age I have seen a lot of players start to slip. But it is tough to argue with his track record and his rating (according to my scout). Joe Chavarraga started to slip at 35. Romano Gonzalez at 36. If I can get two seasons of sub-3.00 ERA, 220+ IP, and a 1.00 WHIP, I will be very pleased.
Plus, you can not underestimate playing in DC. My starting pitchers normally have BABIPs of .260-.280. Over the past few seasons McEvoy has dealt with .290+ (playing in Wilmington with that defense will do that).
This is more of a signing for the future than immediate help. I have five solid SPs, now six. But this is probably the last season for Romano Gonzalez and Joe Chav, and next years SP FA class does not feature someone like McEvoy. Considering what I would have to give up in a trade for someone of this much talent, I had to land him, even if SP is not a pressing need.
