It's June in the BLB - the Dog Days of Summer are getting ready to hit full gear. While teams start to jockey around the standings and settle into their routine for the long months ahead, the team at OSA seem less than content with their Top Players list. This week's list showed major movement on both lists.
YAAAAAWWWWNNNNN... Mel Woodbury secures the #1 spot for yet another week and really shows no sign of letting up. After "Doorbell" however, things really start to shake up. Cesaro Campoveroe and José Guzman swapped spots at 2 & 3 as well as Jared Kirby and now injured Sergio Lumar pulling a flip flop.
We see a MAJOR leap of this week with Windy City's Cliff Burgett, who just made his debut two weeks ago, climbing 10 huge places all the way up to #9 from #19. Meanwhile, Carolina's Vincent Nino tumbled 7 spots to #15 on this week's list.
Perhaps most interesting is the huge week we saw in debuts with 4 new faces making the list for the first time this season. Pittsburgh's Johnny Buzzell, coming off a fantastic 1985 season, finally sees his name in lights debuting at #13. While the tailend of the list saw new blood with Roger Moran (#18) of Dallas, Dale O'Hegarty (#19) of Virginia and Windy City's Jou Onomoto (#20). These four new sticks replace Kyoden Kubota (Maine), Ken Cahill (Los Lunas) Amato Albors and
Frank Donegan (both of Hartford).
ONE TO WATCH: Ray Provencia (RF) - Sin City - Only 17 years old when the Los Lunas Javalinas made him the last pick of the 2nd round in the BLB's first amateur draft, Ray Provencia, the speedy kid out of the corn fields of Iowa had a buzz follow him throughout his early career. In 1981, due to a error in paperwork filed with the BLB during a change in ownership, Provencia was left unprotected in that year's expansion draft and happily snapped up by the Indianapolis Clowns. After 3 injury filled seasons in the Clown's system, they included him in a Winter Meeting deal with Sin City that brought Dante Geake to Indy. Provencia made the Opening Day roster for the Gamblers in '85 and hasn't looked back. An underrated '85 campaign where he registered 32 2Bs, 10 3Bs, 16 HRs and stole 32 bases (in 39 attempts). With 14 HRs already this season in just 50 games, Provencia is become a bright light in Sin City.
While there were not nearly as many dramatic moves or debuts on the mound, the stat heads at OSA did do a lot of moving around to land on their new Top 20. Joe Aurillo and Gil O'Moore remained in the 1-2 position while a laundry list of hurlers swapped positions up and down the line.
The one significant jump, like on the Hitting side, was by a Windy City Playboy. In this case, Raul Carillo, who made his debut last week, jumped up 5 spots to #15 on this week's list.
The lone debut was from a former Windy City hurler - Wilmington's Russ McEvoy. McEvoy, who has been injured twice this season, has been absolutely phenominal this season, despite posting a 1-5 record. One IL Scout said, "McEvoy has got to be the unluckiest guy in the league this season. His numbers have been great, but he's just not getting any help."
McEvoy replaced teammate Edward McVean on the Top Player's list.
ONE TO WATCH: Ben Irvin (SP) - Philadelphia - Though it may be impossible to garner any attention in the IL this season if you're not sporting a Playboy's jersey, Ben Irvin has been downright nasty! The lefty is sporting an unbelivable 0.83 WHIP in his first 10 starts and throwing dominant ball this season. A first time All-Star in 1985, his name could reach the OSA list any day now.
Thanks again for another fine week of BLB action! Keeping checking in and we'll keep counting them down on From The Top!
