  • 1986 BLB Debut Thread

It wasn't supposed to happen this fast... but the Harcourt injury already has me dippin' the minors.

Joe Lukies will come up from AAA to take the utility infield role from new starter Christian Martinez.

Lukies came over with Tanner Reader in the '82 deal that sent Mark MacAdie to Washington (the last trade that the Colonials made with the Bats).

Lukies was an '84 & '85 AA All-Star before playing the second half of the season at AAA Detroit.

Virginia...where a 4-5-3-4 infielder fills the "utility" role...

I've always liked Lukies. Dude is very impatient and during a full season, will likely have single-digit walks as well as homers, but he could be serviceable. My scout still thinks he has good contact and gap power. Poor defender though.

No... more like "new smarter Virginia where we don't rush our #1 hitting prospect to the BLB to fill in for the loss of our #1 player in a season that we won't contend in anyway". 2 years ago I would have just rushed Maeda up... that's not the best big picture move.

Plus, I have him as 5-6-3-4-4... won't do much... but should at least find some gaps when pressed into duty at Colonial National Park.

        SP Joe Zazueto

        http://www.simgamingnetwork.com/blb/...layer_651.html

He actually made his debut at the beginning of the season, but I needed a place to talk about how good he is. In eight starts, he is 2-4 with a 2.59 ERA. My scout has him 3-5-5, and while he doesn't strike many guys out, he keeps the ball down and has a groundball ratio of 72%. He has thrown seven quality starts.

In single-A he had a 4.50 ERA. In double-A he had a 4.50 ERA. In triple-A he had a 3.72 ERA. Might be a better pro than I expected.

          OF Chad Petty........MR Martin Nigo

A couple of ex-Wilmington boys picked up via Rule V this season. Both have performed well in AAA. Nothing to write home about ratings-wise. In fact, my scout's assessment of Petty is even worse than his ratings. But they're fairly young, and still have a chance to make slight improvements. Neither is ever expected to be a Major League starter. But they may eventually be ML bench warmers. Since they were acquired via Rule V, they'll be riding the pine in Los Lunas for the rest of this season.

I thought Nigo was a nice pickup at the time. I didn't expect him to get off to such a rough start.

The top prospect in my system is 5-3, 2.66 ERA, 1.15 WHIP in his debut so far. Really pitched well in May, 3-1 with a 1.30 ERA. He had just pitched 7 shutout innings and then had thrown 4 innings of no-hit ball against Los Alamos before getting injured after striking out the side. Luckily it's only a 2 week injury. I know I'm jinxing it now, but he's probably the first player to come through my system that might actually do something at the BLB level.

                Manny Lopez

Manny is the first pitching call-up for our ailing staff. My scout projects him to be a decent starter, but its cool as I can't see him being any worse than Franklin has so far this season.

                  The Muckdogs are calling up:

SP Nakazo Sasaki, 24 years old

                  1984 - Rd 1, Pick 1

After a rough start in AA ball in 1984 Sasaki went 12-2 in AA ball in 1985 with a 2.78 ERA and was called up to AAA for the start of the 1986 season. So far in AAA he's gone 7-1 with a 2.09 ERA, 61 K's, and 20 BB's. Time to see what the #1 pick can do in the BLB.

                  AND

MR Ken Bayer, 22 years old

                  1985 - Rd 2, Pick 3 (27th overall)

Bayer has been a complete surprise as far as ratings and performance go. In 1985 he played AA ball and went 3-1 with 17 saves and 1.44 ERA. So far in AAA ball in 1986 he's gone 2-1 with 13 saves and a 1.96 ERA. He keeps the ball on the ground, can hold runners, and will be a setup man for now.

In the near future look for:

SP Chet Stephens, 22 years old

                  1985 - Rd 1, Pick 3

A fast riser in every sense of the term. Started out in AA this season and quickly went 3-0 with a 0.70 ERA so on he went to AAA. In a little over a month he's now gone 3-1 with a 1.39 ERA, 38 K's, and only 7 BB's. The fans love him, the hitters hate him, will he boom or bust?

Here he comes. We really don't have too much else to look forward too. Our offense is old and getting older so we brought up all 3 of our pitching prospects just to give the fans something to cheer for. They are all early 20's and wanted to be in the BLB and have proven themselves in the minors.

                      Len John, 2B/SS

Acquired from the Abe trade, John has started off hot in AAA, hitting .317 with 4 HR and 29 RBI. I haven't gotten anything from Leal and Ch'oe so far, so Ch'oe gets axed and Leal goes to the bench. Hopefully John proves that he's ready.

                        SP Julian Orozco

Orozco, the #50 prospect in the BLB, will make his debut Friday the 13th (shiiiiit) against Los Alamos. A former reliever, Orozco has shown no problems starting in AAA and my scout thinks he is more than ready for the BLB level. OSA has him at 4-6-8 as well. I went back and forth between Orozco and Tajo Hernandez as far as who to call up, but went with Orozco pretty much because he has an extra year of experience in the minors and my scout says he's ready. Hernandez might be a week or two behind him either way.

Orozco is going to be a stud. I should of pushed harder to trade for him.
