  • BLB Debut Thread- 1985 Edition

    It's a tradition...

    CF Larry Fitzsymoms

Fitz is the #7 prospect in the Bats organization and the 99th overall prospect in the BLB. Acquired from Carolina in 1983 in exchange for OF Chicho Ochoa. He has hit .300+ every season in the minors since 1981. This year, his second season in Triple-A, he is hitting .309 with a .386 OBP and .813 OPS. He is an excellent CF and an above average base stealer. Oh, and he is a switch-hitter. To make room for him in center fielder, Michio Nago will move to right field, where the coaching staff is more confident in his abilities.

    2B Bob Burleson

Bob is the #13 prospect in the Bats organization. The 24-year-old was originally drafted in 1980 by the Hartford Whalers. That off-season he was signed by the Bats organization and has played very well ever since. This season, Bob is hitting .302 with a .827 OPS, his second in Triple-A. He can field 1B and 2B very well, and is a doubles machine. He will not start at the BLB level right now, but was called up because he had nothing left to prove in the minors. Hopefully he provides a spark off the bench.

Great debut for Fitzsymons. Played in every game of the week, going 7/24, with a walk, four RBI and three runs scored. Oh, and he hit a HR. He had eight career minor league homeruns. Someone has been lifting. He also stole a base.

Bob only had one start this week, but what a game he had. In the 1-0 win over Virginia, Burleson hit a double to score the games only run. With R.A. Grounds struggling, Burleson might get a few more ABs than originally expected.

I had one BLB Debut this last sim...

Joe Marino ...a Closer in my Minors since he was drafted in '79 came up for his first taste. Pitched 3 solid innings... a couple hits... no runs... 4 K's... My favorite Joe Marino fun fact... actually rates out as a Left Fielder as well.

        Jeremiah Wallace

Made his debut last sim vs the Hartford Whalers. His line...

        8IP, 3H, 0R, 2BB, 9K

The most heralded PLAYER to come through the Dinos minor league system, he surely didn't disappoint. He followed that with a 7 inning, 2 hit, 7 k's and not allowing a run again. He got battered around his 3rd start with the new team that I can't seem to beat (Miss), but his line after 3 starts

        2-1, 2.87 ERA, 23 K, 7 BB, 8 H, in 15.2 innings pitched

          Anibal "Zombie" Rivera

The Zombie will make his debut this week, assuming we're in any games worth a damn for him to pitch in. Anibal projects to be a 6-7-6, and is very close to reaching that potential already. Originally came through the organization as a closer, he will be the setup man to Bobby Sizer, which I'm hoping will create a pretty deadly late game setup. There's a chance this is a year too early, but hey, why not?

          AAA Career - 33 games, 3-1, 2.72, 34K, 18BB, 14S (1 ER, 10K in last 10IP)

Los Lunas Javalinas - BLB Debut

              SP Andres Letonan

Acquired during the off-season via a trade with the Wilmington Wildcats, along with IF Ryan Berose and (AA) 3B Kip Carr; in exchange for SP Alonzo Gugierrez. The 22 year-old has, for the most part, held his own (4.17 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, .238 OAVG). His greatest contribution is still the $14M in salary expense he is saving the franchise. The Javelinas hope to capitalize on their improved financial condition prior to the start of next season.

                SP Luis Miguel Gutierrez
He's still only 19, but made his first two BLB starts: 1-0 with a 2.63 ERA with 9 strikeouts in 12 innings. He'll be fun to watch. With Puerias, Gutierrez, Areas, and eventually Homer, I think I have a nice core to work with in my rotation.

                  Elijah Combs

The 20 yr old SP gets a chance to be a September call-up and make a start with Recalde going down for at least one start. Not a bad last couple of games for Combs, with two starts each of 8 innings, 6 total hits, 0 ER, and 11 K's. Both him and Lindsay had a chance for this spot, but Combs has the numbers.

                  AAA - 15 starts, 6-3, 2.79, 78K

I don't think I'll have any debuts this season. My next "stud" to make the leap will be Maeda, but I don't see that happening till next September at he earliest.

Yeah, he looks overmatched so far in AAA.

                        ---

I'm calling up a few guys for September, but no debuts.

Too small of a sample size, I think. But, yes, certainly not ready yet.

Well, again, he is going to be in AAA in 1986 regardless, so why not give him a preview of the competition.

Just don't pull a Linty and call him up.
