  • Scouting question?

    When my scout says:

"Simply hopeless at the plate. Probably won't hit more than .310 over the course of a season." What the hell am I supposed to think about that kind of comment?

Doesn't really answer your question, but Linty asked the same question on the OOTP boards

From what I have seen, the first part of the overall summary -"Simply hopeless at the plate" - looks at all of the player's batting ratings and averages them, then selects the first part of the comment from that average. The ".310" part of the comment looks at the contact rating only.

In other words, I would expect the player you are referring to is a 6-2-2-2-2 for potential or something very close to that.

Hmm, reading that thread makes me fear feeder leagues.

Yeah, I read somewhere that there are some serious problems with them as well. I don't think they are an option untill the issues are fixed.

I have definitely seen quite a number of those high contact guys with no other talents in Beta (the league with the Feeder Leagues). I never thought that it had anything to do with feeder leagues. But, guess it actually does.

We don't have those types of players in this league and we need to keep it that way.

              I've got one.

EDIT: Just going through the players in the league, I found a handful of these guys. Just wanted to see if Feeder Leagues were solely responsible for producing these types of players.

Yeah this is exactly the type of guy El Prez is referring to in the original post in this thread. My scouts comment on Acosta -

"Simply hopeless at the plate. Probably won't hit more than .330 over the course of a season. As close to an automatic out as you can get."

Who comes up with the idea for scouts to make comments like this one?

They shouldn't... and Markus didn't design it that way... the .___ number is coming from the hitters BABIP. Which is incredibly high.

I've gotta say, to this point in version 9, I have thrown away almost all the scouts ratings and comments, and am going strictly on stats alone. The whole removal of "real" scouting from this version has taken away a fun element of the game. Was it a lot more work? Absolutely. But at least you got a lot of opinions, and you never know if your scout was finding a diamond in the rough, or giving you bad advice. But to me, that's more realistic than what we have now.

So, while I have no idea what the statement from your scout really means, I don't see much value in the text based stuff anyway. How I long for OOTP 8....

I think it is coming from his contact rating and the reason his BABIP is so high is that his contact rating is high and his avoid K rating is low.

There really is a fundamental flaw in this type of player. What kind of player strikes out frequently, has almost no power but hits for a high average? There are none. The only thing left is for him to have an unrealisticly high BABIP.

I agree with this comment more or less. The scouting system in the old version may have been a little too cumbersome but the new system is just silly.

Who came up with the idea that some scouts are great at identifying potential superstars but don't seem to have the slightest idea which of the remaining players are potential major leaguers, while others are good at identifying potential major leaguers but don't know who the stars will be? Just dumb.

I also really miss being able to get reports on my own teams or on players I am hoping to acquire in a trade.

I agree. I think scouting is awful now. I'd love to have it the old way. Do they ever send emails anymore about a guy improving or declining in the minors like they used to?

That's gone thankfully since there won't be any more huge ratings drops, they are more tired to injury now I believe.

I wish they had kept the old scouting system where you had 3-5 scouts etc. and they operated the same way, but the scouting director handled it, so you'd line up your tasks with the director and he'd determine how to handle it instead of having to manage 5 guys individually.

The new system does kinda suck.

It just seems so random. My scout will speak very highly over guys that HE says have worse potential.

I like the ratings increases/drops of the old way. Was more realistic to me. It's like an unmasking, a "ooops we were real wrong about this guy". I'm not feeling that in this version.
