Philly takes 2 out of 3 from Cali to start the second half. Game 3 was dominated by Morla and Redding against Kopp, while Ron Bynum did his part for the Kodiaks on the mound. Still, a series win on the road to start the 2nd half is better than our usual post All-star break nosedive.

Swept Denver to get within one game of .500. This division is a bloodbath and that doesn't look like its changing. We will be getting some reinforcements from the DL next sim with Sepulveda, Purcell, and Herndon coming off the DL.

We won 2 of 3 against Death Valley to keep up the good play we've had lately. It was a rough start, but we've slowly found our footing. Some thoughts on the first half, now that we're at the break:

                  1. I don't know what that first couple of months was about, but we were terrible. On May 15th we were 11-22, the second worst team in the league. We didn't really start winning games until after June 5th, but since then we're 33-13, second best in the IL to the Seattle juggernaut.

                  2. It's been a mixed bag for the young hitters on this team. Some of them, like Ian Lisch and Bert Garza haven't yet found their stride at the plate. Rookie 3B Rory Smith seems to be figuring things out - he's hitting .289 with 7 HRs and 19 RBI in July. I've always thought he'd be a good player and now he leads all rookies in homers.

                  3. My pitching, like the rest of the team, was a disaster in the first month and a half. Since then, it's been pretty good. Two starters, Dave Theisen and Dave Payette, made the All Star team and have been really good. Ed Carroll is finally looking like a guy who's falling off, but hopefully he can hold off the decline for another year.

                  4. The old faces are all just about gone. Geoff Yonke isn't hitting and can't field, so his days may be over (he's not currently on the BLB roster). Carroll is mortal. According to the "Meet the Team" page in my game, my top players are 24, 22 and 22 years old. The veterans are still eating up massive parts of my budget, but they are no longer the centerpieces of this team.

                  5. On the farm - 2B Dave Davidson is crushing the ball in A and AA. He seems to be coming along pretty quickly. International signing CF Justin Babbage is hitting .335 as an 18 year old in A. Hopefully some more reinforcements are on the way, but I don't think anyone is close enough to expect getting a boost from the farm this season.

This wasn't how I pictured we'd get here, but I'm ok with where we sit at the moment. Maybe it just took a little time for some of the young guys to start playing well. Hopefully we can keep pace with Philly and Baltimore the rest of the way and we don't start playing like the team I saw in April and May.

Good first half wrap up. Few notes on DC...

-Crazy that Yonke is down in Richmond. Looking at your active roster, it seems like the right play but still a shock.

-Washington has the #1 rotation ERA in the BLB. It's a pitcher friendly park but with Carroll slowing down, you still wouldn't expect that from a group that 3/5 of the rotation is 24 or younger.

-I doubt any other contender has this mix of old and young. Carroll, Lewis, Rosaro, Yonke, are old, declining and expensive. But DC might lead the league in contributions from players in their mid 20s.
