SIM COMPLETE - 1985 - Regular Season 6

Does anybody have any thoughts on what is going on with this guy? My scout sees him as an average reliever at best and based upon his career through around his 35th birthday that is probably a bit optimistic. Since the beginning of last season though, he has been at least arguably, the most effective reliever in the BLB, yet according to my scout, his ratings haven't changed much if at all. 58 hits over 102 innings can't just be good luck can it? It seems as though something goes on in OOTP that is not explained by ratings but I have no idea what it is.

I'm going with either:

(A) The thinning out of the BLB Talent Pool in the post expansion years

(B) After his stint in Pittsburgh, he was so happy to be away from that over-rated 1B... ithat his career took off through the power of positive thinking

(C) Being from Southgate, MI, the kid started dining in my favorite hole in the wall Italian place ("Roma") which open in Southgate right around 1983.

(D) OOTP is a strange and random program and attempting to figure some of this crap out is damned near impossible.

The Good:
- We snapped our 9 game losing streak with a sim ending sweep of Sin City, which is nice.

- Joe Gauina continues to pitch above expectations by going 8 innings giving up 2 hits and 4 BB, while K'ing 7 in a no decision. Wish he could've gotten the win, but the bullpen picked up for him.

- Dante Geake came out strong against his former club, giving up 7 hits, 2 runs and 2 BB's in 7.1 innings. Not great, but real solid considering the situation.

- Pete Miller was in the zone, hitting .571/.609/.810 for the sim.

- Not to be outdone, Arnier Tafur hit .458/.500/.625, continuing his hot start to the season.

The Bad:
- A lot of my hitters still suck. I'm looking at you Terry Drewitt, Blanco Escandell, and all you bastards on the bench.

- I can't really complain, but Eric McCoy decided this would be a good sim to allow his first earned runs of the season, giving up 3 ER and 2 HR in 1.2 innings

- Joaquin Gonzalez continues to struggle this year, allowing 8 hits, 5 runs, and 4 BB's in 5.1 innings. I guess he did have 2 K's.

The Ugly:
- Joe Gauina refuses to talk contract extension, as he's still upset with our team performance. He's either still upset from last year, or he thinks we should be doing better this year. Either way if I cant resign him, it'll make for an interesting situation come July. Really don't want to deal him, but unless we're doing really well by the trade deadline, he's gone.

- And Clay, I feel your pain. Ernesto Adron was willing to resign for $12 million after the first sim. I was worried since he's always getting hurt, and figured I still had some time. Since then his demands have gone from $17 million to $19 million to $23 million this sim. Woops...

Your scouts are probably just undervaluing him.

That or he's extremely lucky. His ratings aren't bad according to OSA. He just has control problems. But, he keeps the ball in the park and can strike out a batter. Put him in the right situations and he won't give up too many runs.

edit: Also, looking at his past OSA reports. In 82 and 83, when he gave up over 20 homeruns out of the pen, his movement was rated as a 5. In the past two seasons, it's been up at 6 and the ball is not flying anymore. He probably figured it out at 35.

Odd stat I noticed... My team is second in the IL with a .985 fielding percentage, and going into last sim, lead the IL in range. Yet my BABIP is 8th worst at .299.

Shouldn't my BABIP be a lot lower with a team that hardly makes errors, and has a great range... which means they make a greater amount of plays than usual when the ball is hit their way?

Range Factor measures the number of plays a fielder attempts in an average game. The formula is:

Range Factor = (Assists + Putouts) / Games

What hidden stat is my defense missing?

I would think a team with a great fielding percentage and a great range rating would also have a very low BABIP... Thoughts?

Bad luck. Hitters are putting it where your fielders are not.

It's not homeruns either because you're one of the best in allowing the fewest. Just bad luck. I wonder where your team stands in giving up XBH not including homeruns.

Also, keep in mind that Range Factor only measures the balls your players can make a play on. Note: Putouts and Assists. If it's an infield single, range factor won't measure this. And surely your team wouldn't commit an error.

An unusually high number of unplayable balls are falling in. Your high range factor is probably keeping the overall batting average down, but it won't necessarily keep BABIP down.

If your fielders are as good as the stats indicate, then I would assume you'll see things balance out as the season progresses.

Team range factor is kind of a strange statistic and since those are a little more than 4 for most teams, I think the actual fromula is (assists + P.O./9 innings)/9 fielders so it is measuring fielding plays made per nine innings per fielder. Since all teams end up making the same number of outs in nine innings, a team whose players mostly have great range will not necessarily have a high team range factor since the formula does not include balls in play anywhere.

The main factor that will cause a team to have a high RF, it seems to me, is if that team has a lot of ground ball pitchers since ground balls normally result in a putout and an assist while strikeouts and flyballs result in a putout only.

I think the BABIP should be a better measure of whether or not fielders have good range rather than RF.
