  • Scrap Heap Players

Anybody else have a couple players that you picked up off the scrap heap that are making significant contributions?

I let my 3B go to Free Agency but his young replacement couldn't get above the Mendoza line. I signed Dan Penny in May to give him a shot and he's been in my lineup ever since. He hit just .197/.234/.245 in California last year but is hitting .297/.356/.399 for me this year in the #9 slot.

The other spot I needed help was at DH. I picked up Manuel Guandique, who was released by Windy City earlier in the year. He's not the most patient hitter, but he has 5 HR and 14 RBI in the 24 games he's played for me so far and his OPS is 200 points higher than it was in Windy City.

      Actually I got a couple.

First one is just a backup 2B, but starts against lefties. He's nothing great but he was an allstar last year and lately had really come on.

Kichisaburo Kubota signed in April. Batted .433 in July after starting off slowly. Has a little bit of pop too. http://ootp.oldredboat.com/news/html...layer_357.html

Second guy is MR Angel Lopez. Got him off of waivers from Philly. 34 yrs old making under 700K but he's been a solid 2.25 era out of the bullpen.

Not exactly scrap heap, but I signed SP Herbert Haile during FA last winter. He wasn't one of the most sought after FA's, and he only appeared in 13 games for Washington last year.

This year, for Wilmington, Haile is 10-6 in 25 starts, with a 3.36 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Oh, it only cost me $280,000 to sign the 30 year old.

I picked up Johnny Rabe for my bullpen and he has been solid all year.

Yah it kinda sucks. I think there's two reasons for this.

              1) Too many of the top players are younger so are getting automatic contracts and arbitration. This is a known issue with the start of leagues and eventually evens out when the "big bang" players retire.

              2) Too many players take hometown discounts. It's relatively easy to sign potential free agents to reasonable deals before they hit free agency. More players should test free agency. This i one of my big requests for OOTP 07, although then they'd need to fix the issue with players not re-signing with their teams if they're allowed to go to free agency.

No one really at the ML level, but I have a bunch of minor leaguers that I picked up off the scrap heap and were great for me all year.
