Oh yeah. It's a bigger deal for position players.

I'm assuming players with low work ethic would balloon out more? Wonder what the rationale is.

It might be a factor. Not completely sure.

Wouldn’t be surprised if personality plays a role. Greed and injuries could be in play too. If a player is paid well long term and say tears an ACL, rehab might be secondary to eating.

He was the first guy I thought of.

But then you have players like Andy Garcia, who had a normal work ethic but nevertheless struggled with his weight, especially throughout his 30s.

There's also Sullivan Smart, who had a high work ethic.

Another good example. Aside from the 2018 partial renaissance, he was basically done as a starting-caliber infielder after turning 30. And he's even a guy who was nimble enough to win a DWI and steal 20 bagsin his youth.

None of you younger GMs remember this guy, but I remember this fat ass guy. Whats funny is he completely blossomed and defied everything about this game we know. He even got a velocity bump in his mid / late twenties.

Oh and he was FAT from the beginning. Worst work ethic ever. Every season he put on another 5-7 pounds.

I like the fielding discussion. It's definitely been on my mind for several seasons. It's nearly impossible to find someone that sticks at an up-the-middle position. That's what has really been an issue across the league. I don't think anyone can say no one cares about C / 2B / SS / CF. It's just that it's really really hard to find players that can hit at those positions and also play defense.

It's been a merry-go-around in Denver. We've had a different starting catcher every season for like a decade. Katz even won back his job that he once lost.

Pelloni frustrated me with his inconsistency at both the offensive and defensive side. Now we're hoping that Farmer can be that defensive shortstop with some .650 OPS offense.
Ichikawa is the starting 2B again until Dusty shows up. I knew what I got out of Ichikawa. Solid defense and that .650 OPS sometimes a bit higher.

Banda is playing exceptional defense at CF but again, not hitting.

Getting tough out here to find offense and play defense.

I’m not totally sure that’s it. I think we have really tiny parks that put a premium of finding guys that can hit. California has a team built on pitching and guys that field and hit and it can work. I just think, that all thing considered, a person’s offence wins the debate over defence in most cases.

This decline of ability has me worried about Morla as he ages, although we got a lot from late 30s CJ Wilkinson.

The superstars like Morla seem to be pretty resilient as they age. I don't think you need to worry much about his bat. You probably should expect that you will need to move him to first base within the next two or three years though. He's visibly declining as a defender and it won't be too long until he's too much of a defensive liability at second base. Of course, moving him from second base to first base will reduce the relative value of his hitting, so you understandably don't want to do it until you have to.
