  • Notable September Call-Ups -- 1984 Edition

Bringing anyone up for their first taste of action????

    ***

Virginia is calling up three guys who have spent at least some time on the Org Top 10... and two of them have been on BA's Top 100 in the past.

Jerry Tracy (OF) -- #6 Organizational Prospect -- Drafted 1.6 in 1983 -- Tracy, though just drafted last year, has been fast tracked from Day 1 after a full four year college career at UCONN where he started every game of his career including a thrilling Freshman season where he helped to lead the Huskies back to the NCAA College World Series. The 24 year old started '84 in AA where he earned All-Star honors before a back injury knocked him out for nearly two months. Upon returning to 100%, he was moved to AAA Detroit where he responded by hitting .359/.435/.641.

Outlook: Tracy is destined to make the big-team next season, though it might be tough to unseat blossoming Larry Headington for the #1 LF spot. Tracy will get the majority of the ABs versus RHP this September.

    ---

Ivan Reveles (CL?) -- Former Top 10 Org and BA Top 100 Prospect -- Drafted 1.13 in 1981. Though originally drafted to be the Closer of the future in Virginia, rumors out of Williamsburg have the Colonials looking to stretch him out and give him another go as a starter. A soft-tosser, he's not going to rack up the K's like he was originally scouted, his movement and control could compete with many of the most successful starters in the BLB today.

Outlook: The Colonials expect Ivan to pitch in AAA next year, but decided to jump at the chance to give him a few starts in the bigs to see what he's made of.

    ---

Rodney Nakagawa (2B) -- Former Top 10 Org -- Drafted 11.4 in 1981. Nakagawa is not very impressive on paper. He wasn't a top prospect. Still doesn't scout particularly well. But the kid comes to play every day. He's a contact/gap hitter that should enjoy hitting in the deep power alleys at Colonial Park. He has enough speed to make himself dangerous and, despite striking out more than he should, will take a walk on occasion.

Outlook: Nakagawa is coming up to auditon for a the backup 2B/utility role for 1985. The kids hits a little, runs a little, and plays defense. The Colonials have tried spending money at the utility spot in the past with guys like Tom Cirlos, but they hope to use some farm hands this season and feel like Rodney can continue to surprise.
    The Great One!

    To many rings to count...

    Pat Washington (1B)
#1 Organizational Prospect, #22 BA Top Prospect

-Pat has been on the edge of being called up all year and he will get his first taste of the bigs this year. By all reports, Pat should be no worse than what we are already touting as starting first basemen and he will get the starting nod over Hosokaya against righties for the rest of the year or until he stinks up the joint worse than Hosokaya already does.

Denver Brode got his first call-up. His first start went well (7IP, 1ER, 6K, 1BB) and then in his next start he only went 2.2 innings before coming out with a tender elbow.

Hopefully a couple weeks off will be good for him and he'll be ready for the playoffs.

Pat Washington went 9/15, with 3 BB, 2 K. Looks we might need to give this man a cookie. And get him out of the bottom of the lineup....

Never been a top 10 prospect. Former 9th round pick of the Los Alamos Bandits that I signed to a minor league deal after he was cut. This season, in 115.2 IP, he struck out 115 with a 3.35 ERA in Triple-A. He made his debut this past sim. He went 6.1 IP, 4 H, 4 BB, 1 ER, and 4 Ks in a no decision. On the day of his call-up, the minor league system report said he was "probably overmatched at Triple-A."

          SS - Pete Summers
Former 5th round pick, #4 ORG prospect, #58 overall prospect. Summers can play 2B, 3B, and SS all at a high level, and has shown he can be an OBP machine in the minors. He made his debut this past sim, going 5/10, with an RBI, BB, and a K.

          RP - Randy Segaar
He was a 3rd round pick back in 1978, and at the young age of 29, he made his debut this past sim. 2 G, 3 IP, 2 BB, 1 K. Just brought him up to keep my arms fresh.

          RP - Yuan-zhang Chiu
A closer (the past two seasons) in the minors, Chiu is a high strikeout guy. In his minor league career he has struck out 236 in 233 IP. He made his debut this past sim, pitching in one game, lasting 2.1 innings, giving up 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 Ks, and getting the loss.

          LF - Miguel Angel Padilla
I was going to leave MAP in the minors, but after Steve Bing was lost for the year with an injury, I decided to bring up the youngster. MAP turned 19 just last week. #2 ORG prospect, and #14 overall. He will get a few at bats this week.
