    What Might Have Been...

    So... I thought of an interesting thread today..... I was going to pose the question (with apologies to the expansion teams) to the teams that have been in the league since '78.... How many players are still on your Active Roster today that have been there since Season 1 ('78)???

    Interesting topic? Yes? Kinda???

    So, I was researching my team and found that technically I have none.... Wilton Harcourt, who is on my team now, was also on my team in '78, but previous ownership didn't resign him. MR Nicolás Malenado has pitched in Virginia in every season since '78, but technically sits at AAA right now, so I'm not counting him. So... I'm digging around....

    ...and I see it...

    ... I thought I knew my team's history...

    ... I thought I knew every bad decision made by the previous ownership....

    ...the stupid ballpark.... the Cafferty 20 year extension... signing Danny Nelson to a $3.0+ deal a week after calling him up and wasting his $280k years..... not resigning Harcourt....

    ...but I never, ever, ever knew what happened in May of '78....

    ...two months and 6 decisions into his career... GIGGAS traded away TIM "MINKY FINKIN'" NATHAN!?!?!?!? I HAD TIM NATHAN!!!! Those last 100+ wins could have been mine!?!??!

    I'm blown away! This is a completely different team right now if in 1979 I'm taking over a team with an O'Laughlin/Nathan 1-2 punch with Cafferty as my #3. What the hell!?!?!?

    I hate this team.

      The only positional players I still have now are.

      C - Jared Kirby
      2b - Herb Lefebre

      Lefebre has pretty much been a scrub and bounced around between AAA and the ML club. However he took a modest ratings boost and he is a defensive stud at 2B, so he won the job back.

      Other than that I had to clean house as is already known because my market didn't support their contract needs. We've lost some good players.

      Pitchers we've been able to do a better job of keeping.

      SP - Russ McEvoy
      SP - Nathan MacOwl
      RP - Timothy Rohan
      RP - Vernon Simmonds
      RP - Oro Marquetta

      Biggest loss here was SP Jorge Lorral which we moved in the Hoover deal. That deal helped us out tough.

        Yeah, but neither of those guys could keep their ERA down below 2.00 when they were with us. Well Theodore did, but it was only 2 starts and that was too small a sample size...

        Bottom line, there was no way anyone would have known that these guys would be any good!

              I have no one on my current team that was part of the original '78 squad.

              One guy on that original '78 team that was traded away was Frank Dallyn. Since leaving California after being traded for Joe Truex (who didn't hit his peak for many years to come) Dallyn has gone on to Baltimore where he has posted 96 wins.

              I'd love to have that guy back.

              Otherwise, it seems whatever players that were on that team are no longer in the league as all their history is now completely washed away.

                What this thread has taught me is that 98% of all players released by me have been picked up at one time or another by Diesel.

                      Hahaha. That was probably my best trade.

                      Baltimore fans ran me out of town on a rail on the heels of the Stafford signing, but they forget the way I fleeced other teams to acquire the likes of Nathan, Dallyn and Hanrahan.

                        I've had some good trades, and some bad trades. One of my best was acquiring Krnshich for Chuck Chance. I made several trades during my championship year that tore my minors apart, but hey, I won a title. It was well worth it. I wasn't afraid to go for it, and it paid off.

                        Some guys I'd love to have back are Dealba (never wanted to trade him to begin with), Roger Dieter (screw you Earl Eanes), and Charlie MacCabe (loved everything about his game).

                          Rich Parnell's been in Syracuse since Opening Day '78. A couple guys have been up and down, notably Phil Mercier and Lee Myers.

                          Looking around the history was cool though. I never heard/noticed guys like Joe Reyes (got a year in Syracuse in '82)... or realized the man that was Bill Johnson (knew he was good, but didn't know his value was as high around the league as it was). Ironically these guys were together in Florida for ST with Virginia this March.
