Thus why I created a thread just for it... so it won't clog up other threads. Plus I wanted everyone to read about how inept I am at making trades in OOTP.California Kodiaks - GM - 1982-2013

Merged the threads.
One observation I have is that there's a lot more buyers than usual. I lost out on 2 relievers to Washington and another to Baltimore. In the past there would only be a couple other teams looking to improve at the deadline making it much easier to lowball a little bit.

Obviously Davenport seems to be the big winner for the now, but who else has won with their deals... and who on the flip side has hurt their team with the trades they have made?
Loser: California
First off, trading a 3rd and 5th round pick for Tony Palencia and Paul Cloutier was STUPID. Cloutier is already back to AAA... and while Palencia hit .286 last week against LHP, if he doesn't keep it up, he'll be back in AAA with Cloutier.
Trading a 7th round pick for Xalbador Santos a SP from Pittsburgh who is coming off a season where he posted a VORP of 45.0 would not be a bad deal... it's a late pick, and even if Santos doesn't turn it around I wouldn't have wasted the trade... Too bad I could have had Santos for free! But I didn't see a PM to BLB Waivers. Was hoping the in-game claim would be enough... nope.
Trading an 8th round pick for Ron Boyland was a semi decent move on my part... but once again, I screwed things up as I now have too many guys for too few spots. Boyland, Cloutier, and Palencia all essentially offer the same thing. Bad move on my part.
I've also signed Jason Peyton as a SP... but I screwed that up by claiming Mack McMurdo another SP... Throw in Santos, and now I've three guys I wanted for the #5 spot in the rotation. That wouldn't be a problem of course if I just shipped two of them to AAA... but as luck would have it, they all have declined their move to AAA. Jackasses!
The only semi positive move I've made this deadline... is trading for MR Paul Scott from Syracuse... *I hope*. Currently I've got three RP's on my team that are under 25, and have positive VORP. Bing de-She (22), Wayne Smith (20) and Jake Fredrick (22). If Scott, who is only 24 can turn it around in the closers role, I'll have four guys, young, cost protected, and ready to man the bullpen for years to come. Throw in Guzma (21.0 VORP) and Valasque (13.1) and I think I might be building one of the finer bullpens in all of the IL.
Well that's it for the losers so far...
What do you guys think?
The deal for Santos I like from your perspective (and Pittsburg's since he cannot afford a non-performer on his staff with a BLB Championship to win). I wouldn't be concerned that it cost a 7th round pick when you could have had him for nothing. Santos' ratings aren't great, I'll admit, but a lot of guys have done well without them, so I think he could bounce back. Also, Pittsburgh is a notorious hitters park.
I agree with your assessment of Peyton and McMurdo but it hasn't cost you anything other than a little spare change. I'd hand the fifth starting spot to Santos and even if he bombed, I'd give him a shot to win a job next year based on his fine 1983 campaign.
I didn't like your deal for Scott much either. My opinion for a building team is that the pen should only be your last consideration. I think it is much harder to find good starting pitchers and position players and if I was building a team, I would only worry about the pen after I had most of the other pieces in place. Miyamoto didn't do badly in a brief BLB appearance last season and I would have been at least tempted to give him a try again this year. I know he is doing poorly in AAA but I think someone at OOTP got the silly idea that players often get bored in the minors and perform better at a higher level than they do at a lower. The last scout of mine that scouted your AAA team considers Miyamoto a legitamate prospect and I don't think I would have let him go in a deal for Scott.
One other thing I will add is I don't think you were aggressive enough in trying to deal your outfielders, at least with me. I contacted you about reopening talks for O'Fay and you said something like, "I'm not interested in the pitchers we discussed earlier, I need hitting prospects; I'll get back to you" but you never did. It takes a little work to get a decent deal done sometimes and I would have been willing to offer a couple of guys that were interesting for a building team.
You still may be able to get something decent for one or both of them in the off season though, even if you don't get a deadline deal done.

I'd count Maine as a winner after the van Slyke trade. Our minors system is even weaker now after losing Sato and Frayo, but I got 2 players in return that should help us down the stretch and over the next few years. I'm going to have to rebuild at some point, but I think the current group I have still has 3-4 more years of being a contender.

I still stand by my statement that I think there needs to be some type of benefit to winning the Championship besides just bragging rights.
There needs to be a motivation for teams that are in the hunt to "go for it" and risk their farm to grab the brass ring.
Not only will it keep things fresh all year... but I think it will create parity. The Great One!
