  • BLB Debut Thread- 1984 Edition

I didn't see a thread for this season yet, so I'm making one. Go ahead and let us know which prospects you're calling up.

This sim the Carolina Tobs will call up one of the top pitching prospects in the league, Cy Kirkpatrick:

Ranked #13 in the most recent BA Top 100, Kirkpatrick dominated AA this season and has recently made 2 very good starts at AAA. Only 18 years old (he'll turn 19 in a week or so), Kirkpatrick already has great stuff and movement. Control is a bit of a concern for now, but the Tobs feel he's ready to take over a spot in their starting rotation. So far this season, Kirkpatrick has struck out more batters than he's allowed to reach base.

19 year old RP Zhi-peng Zhao will make his Millers debut this week.

Never a highly touted prospect, but Zhao has done nothing put produce since entering the Millers minor league system. He dominated in Reading at age 17 and was sent to AA Harrisburg the following year. After another dominant stint as closer, ZZ was given the same role in Allentown, and has delivered with 22 saves and a 2.43 ERA. With the underperformance of Frank Davis, the Millers are hoping that Zhao can contribute in a positive way for the big league club.

      ZHAO'S MINOR LEAGUE STATS

      1982-Reading (A): 1.77 ERA, 12 saves, 20.1 IP
      1983-Reading (A): 2.63 ERA, 13 saves, 24 IP
      1983-Harrisburg (AA): 1.96 ERA, 12 saves, 23 IP
      1984-Allentown (AAA): 2.43 ERA, 22 saves, 33.1 IP

23 year old SS Curt Boyd made his debut 7/3/84 vs. Washington.

A top 100 prospect for at least the last two years, this Texan will likely be one of most versatile defensive infielders in the BLB. Boyd got his opportunity with the release of Henry Stafford. Not a big bat, but Boyd has the potential to be a solid player in the league.

        BOYD'S MINOR LEAGUE STATS

        1982-Orlando (A): 56 games, .258BA, 9 Dbl, 2 Tr, 4 HR, 28 RBI

        1983-Orlando (A): 30 games, .308BA, 7 Dbl, 0 Tr 2 HR, 14 RBI
        1983-Camden (AA): 56 games, .284BA, 17 Dbl, 2 Tr, 4 HR, 23 RBI
        1983-Annapolis (AAA): 20 games, .455BA

        1984-Annapolis(AAA): 72 games, .309BA, 28 Dbl, 5 Tr, 3 HR, 32 RBI
        1984-Baltimore: 9 games, .261BA

22 year old SP Seth Nelson made his debut 6/11/84 vs. Chicago.

A first round pick in '81, Nelson has done nothing but succeed in the minors, although not seen on the Top 100. Nelson has only had an ERA over 3.00 once in the minors and was rushed to the majors following the disheartening injury to Jeff Franklin. So far, Although a decent pitcher at home, Nelson is having a bit of trouble adjusting to the pressure of pitching in front of the hostile crowds around the league.

          NELSON'S MINOR LEAGUE STATS

          1981-Orlando (A): 5-3, 2.63 ERA

          1982-Orlando (A): 5-3, 2.60 ERA
          1983-Camden (AA): 3-6, 3.73 ERA
1983-Annapolis (AAA): 2-2, 2.21 ERA (torn tricep muscle, out for 12 months)

          1984-Annapolis(AAA): 7-4, 2.57 ERA

          1984-Baltimore(HOME):1-1, 2.30 ERA
          1984-Baltimore(Away): 0-1, 6.35 ERA

            Oscar Paulet - LF/RF

Paulet was a 9th round pick in 1981, and despite being 22, he struggled in Single-A his first season. He was promoted to Double-A by the end of 1982, where he was an All-Star in 1983. He was also batting cleanup that year, when the Auburn Venom won the Double-A Title. He finished that year with 21 doubles, 12 HRs, and 80 RBIs (in 111 games). At the start of 1984, he was in Double-A still, tearing the cover off the ball for the first month, and was then moved to Triple-A. In 58 games, he has hit .281, with 12 doubles, 14 HRs, and 44 RBI. He is currently listed as the #8 prospect on my org top 10. At 25-years-old, it looks like he is ready for the show.

Also interesting to add that Paulet is from Spanish Town, Jamaica. That makes him the ONLY Jamaican player in the entire BLB.

Cam Mills, 23 years old, SP - Batavia Muckdogs

Cam went from Single A, to Double A, to Triple A, to the Show in a matter of months after I took over.

Right now he's 1-5 with a 2.79 ERA. 58 IP, 59 K's, 34 BB. He never gets any help when he pitches thus his poor record to date. He was the 12th pick in the 9th round of the 1980 draft by Carolina.

Baseball America's #42 Rated Prospect - Joshua Poling - will make his BLB Debut on 8/2/84 at Batavia. Poling, who was acquired along with Dale O'Hegarty in Spring Training 1983 from Los Lunas for Joe Sargentini and a wheelbarrow of cash, will join the Colonials as the new everyday 3B with the departure of veteran Jorge Taracena.

Joshua will wear the #5 in honor of his hero Brooks Robinson.

Poling will be an interesting case defensively. If he blossoms at 3B, I'll likely convert Y-Maeda to a 1B or 2B... with Vern Branch converting from SS to the other. Basically, the goal is within 3 years to have an infield of Poling-O'Hegarty-Branch-Maeda.

I get some credit for drafting him, but he was involved in what is probably my worst move as GM. Traded along with a 1st and 3rd pick for Terry Drewitt. If that wasn't lopsided enough, I let Drewitt go unprotected in the expansion draft the following season because I forgot he was on my DL.
