  • What Do You Look For?

    In a pitcher?
    In a position player?
    Stats or ratings...stats and ratings?

I've been playing a lot of SP offline with OOTP 9 and absolutely suck. I can only imagine my SP will translate to MP because apparently I'm going about transactions incorrectly.

    My last 3 seasons in SP...and I thought I had a decent team...59-103, 72-90 (sweet I'm getting better), 59-103 (never mind).

How deep do you guys get into stats when making decisions? VORP/Groundball-Fly ball, Mood, etc...

Any help would be appreciated. I don't want anyone to give away and trade secrets but this game has me licked right now.

Hmm... I imagine you will get a lot of different opinions in this thread... but I generally try and look for well rounded guys... that i think will be able to help the team in a way or another...

For example if i'm looking for a backup IF, I'm going to want good fielding ratings... so even if he can't hit... I want him to be solid elsewhere.

Pitchers are a bit harder to classify... do you want a high strike out guy... a guy who doesn't walk a lot of guys... it really all depends on personal preference...

One way to spot if a pitcher may be a fluke or not is to look at their BABIP... If it's a hell of a lot lower than most years... and its a one year thing... then there's a good chance he might of got pretty lucky that one year. WHIP is a pretty good indicator of what a pitcher really is.

For me... I often check the league averages... if a player is performing above... then I figure they're a good player... if they're not... they're not.

This is the $64,000 question isn't it? In the end what good are ratings if the stats don't match?

To me, I look at stats with ratings as a guide. I made a mistake of a trading for a subpar player who had questionable stats with decent ratings which I won't do again. I also look heavily at mood, desire to win, and a couple of other things. T

he thing about single player that's tough is if you start in the lower levels, like Single A or Rookie League, you may have a nice squad and as soon as your players do well, they get snatched up which makes it hard to stay consistent. I like that. I'm in my 2nd year at rookie league SP and I had first place locked until the last month and I lost 16 games straight to lose first place. Very disheartening.

for me, stats first. stats with subpar ratings means peak year for that player. good stats with poor ratings from a young guy = potential, from an old guy = statistical abberation.

I'd like to add to that. Again this is simply theory from me. I have seen way too numerous times that stats can predict the rise and fall of ratings.

This applies to younger players more, almost like what we like to call "unmasking" in FOF. However this can also apply to vets. I've seen vets under perform their ratings sometimes for a whole season or two...then plummet in their ratings.

To me it's a balancing act that you just need to get a feel for.

Of course there is also the "career" year and the down season. Happens all the time, like real life.
