Baltimore and Stafford To Part Ways?
Baltimore, MD-SGN News Wire
July 2nd, 1984
-There are a number of rumors surrounding the Baltimore front office, but none bigger than the rumor that current Baltimore has written a 22-million dollar pink slip and released third baseman, Henry Stafford. Stafford was signed by the previous Baltimore owner/manager to an incredible, 5-year, 75 million dollar contract, following an All-Star appearance in 1979.
Since that point Stafford had been on a steady decline, never coming close to a return to All-Star form. Over the last three years, Stafford has not hit above .175, and has publicly disagreed with the front office about various team transactions.
The situation escalated with the injuries of 5-time All-Star, Nick Latham and young ace, Jeff Franklin. Baltimore went just 11-15 in June with these two stars on the sidelines, and with Philly hot on their trail, Baltimore might be looking to make a big change. Stafford was earning almost $10000 per game from the bench, has appeared in 36 games, and has just 1 hit in 13 AB.
Although the potential move may put the team severely in the red, Baltimore may decide to make the decision, since an empty roster spot may mark the debut of one of their young prospects.
