  • Your best trades?

I got bored and decided to start a topic and thought that this was a good idea. So far in your GM'ing career, what have been the best trades you have made? I'm lucky enough to have a few:

1979: Millers trade J. Reyes (3B), 5th round pick, cash to Tobs for E. Gremades (1B), A. Abe (SP), J. Bedell (SP)

1981: Millers trade G. Boivin (SP), D. Daintrey (OF) to Bats for F. McGee (C)

1981: Millers trade T. Barriois (RP), 2nd round pick to Dinos for T. Drewery (SP)

1981: Millers trade T. Rogado (3B), M. Remy (RP) to Javelinas for G. Lewis (RP)

1982: Millers trade V. Alicea (SP) to Wildcats for T. Delclos (SP), K. Carpenter (SP), cash

1982: Millers trade 3rd and 5th round picks to Colonials for J. Coker (OF) and B. Pyrmont (SS)

I would have to say that there is only one that I would consider a no question success at this point:

    Washington sends:
SP Carl Pateshall and CF Everardo Merrera
    to Los Alamos for:
All Star CF Steve Bing and Los Alamos' 10th round pick.

I can't track who Washington picked in the 10th round last year, but it really doesn't matter. Good trade going both ways. Pateshall has been my ace this year with Tardif struggling.

None of my trades have ever worked. I think every prospect I've gotten and kept has taken a development hit. The only prospects I've ever had who have done well are the ones I've traded away.

The trio I sent you for Buzzell wasn't too bad...Steward is still a Brawler right?

I didn't post that trade because I thought you got the better end, but Buzzell has been beasting it this year.

I've gotten extremely lucky with trades. Trades that were even at the time, such as the Reyes/EG and Rogado/Lewis deals, have developed into highway robberies for me. The Reyes deal pretty much equated to me trading 2004 Scott Rolen for Albert Pujols with less power and Jake Peavy.

Yeah, I still have Steward and he is an adequate infielder but he took a development hit last year and will never be an impact player like I thought he might. Percival was traded as part of the deal for Elliot who is leading the IL again in OBP, while Miller was part of the deal for Alvarez who was part of the deal for Robbins and Dealba. So I got Steward plus part of Elliot, Robbins and Dealba for Buzzell. I can probably say that was by least bad trade.

            December, 1980

            Washington gets:
            SP Joe Chavarraga

            Dallas gets:
            SP Ezequiel Covtreras
            2nd round pick
            4th round pick
            6th round pick

-Chavarraga has gone 60-18 with a 2.05 ERA. He strikes out 250+ per season. Pitcher of the year. All-Star. Still going strong at 35. Arguably one of the best SPs in the league for that stretch. No signs of declining.
-Covtreras is still in double-A, where he was when I traded him. Struggling at best. He is now 27.

            July, 1980

            Washington gets:
            -(C) Keita Uchimaya
            -(SP) Joe Santoyo
-Two 2nd round draft picks in 1981

            Hyundai gets:
            -(3b) Chaim Lamberts

-Lamberts had an awful 1980 for Hyundai, but did bounce back with a solid 1981, hitting .291 with a .831 OPS. He left as a FA that year.
-Uchiyama was a young catcher who hadn't yet lived up to this potential ratings, but he did so that following season. From 1981-this season, he has averaged a .820 OPS, and on my 1983 title season he hit 14 HRs, 75 RBI, and a .291 average.
-Santoyo was flipped a season later with another marginal AAA pitcher to Philadelphia for a 3rd and 6th round pick. Santoyo has developed into a total scrub.
-The two 2nd round picks I got in this deal turned out to be top #30 catching prospect Mike Murdock and solid LH RP Raphael Pepin.

            November, 1982

            Washington gets:
            3B Brody Whiteley
            4th round draft choice

            California gets:
            SP DT Fitts

-At the time of the trade, Fitts was a 29-year-old control pitcher dominating in AAA. In 1983, he was called up to the bigs and had a solid season for California, going 11-14 with a 3.52 ERA, but it appears to be a fluke. The soon to be 31-year-old is now sitting in AAA with a 6.92 ERA.
-Whiteley at the time of the trade was struggling in AAA. I moved him from SS to 3B, and he tore up AA for 60 games, hitting .353. He was promoted to AAA for 60 games, and he hit .325. This season he beat out Joe Martiez for the starting 3B in April, and is leading my team in batting average at .315.

-It has already been mentioned by spot, but the Pateshall for Bing trade really helped my team out. I was desperate for offense, and Bing was one my best. In 1983 he hit .303, with 16 HRs, 38 doubles, 89 RBI, 102 runs, 42 stolen bases, and won the Glove Wizard award in LF. All-Star You can't get much better than that.
-Pateshall was and is a good SP, but the trading of him opened the door for LH SP Joe Rodriguez in the rotation.
-Bing is looking for a huge contract extension and I probably won't give it to him. Even if he leaves in free-agency and Pateshall continues to be a solid SP for years to come, I still think this deal was a huge win for Washington. If I hadn't made this trade, I'm not sure I win the title in '83.

I don't know about that. That trade might have cost you the BLB title you just won but I'll have to admit you would have one helluva minor league system by now.

I was just saying it was top 5 because it got Wessinmouse kicked out of the league.

We never would have found another Los Alamos owner either.... or the one after that... etc...

Which begs the question... which team has had the most owners?
