  • 1984 Minor League All Stars

So... who were your Minor League All-Stars? I know some of these guys that make the teams... but did any of your major prospects make it?

    For Virginia....

    Single A (A)

Vern Brach (SS) & Pepe Gonzalez (1B)

Branch is a legit Top 50 prospect and just keeps hitting. He was one of my guys from the infamous 16-year olds draft. It's his 3rd season in Single A and he's stilll 6 months shy of his 19th b-day. Gonzalez is that little engine that could guy who just keeps hitting, winning awards and performing despite being a late, late round reach.

    Double A (AA)

Tanner Reader (SP), Joe Lukies (2B) and Jerry Tracy (OF)

Tracy was "the other 1st round pick" from last year (1.6) but certainly not getting as much love as "The Skull". Like the argument of Magness vs Dener Brode, many people thought Pat Brown was the better prospect than Tracy. Tracy has been a gem for us so far though. It will be tough to keep him off the opening day roster next season. However, that's not a huge reach as he was drafted at the age of 22 (out of UCONN).

Reader and Lukies have both made brief visits to the Colonials' Top 10 list... but never stayed long. Both players came to Williamsburg from DC in the trade that sent Mark MacAdie to the Bats in 1982. Hard to say if either will ever develop to BLB talent, but they are both major contributors in Battle Creek.
    The Great One!

    To many rings to count...

      Lets see...

I had four guys selected to the all star game... only three really count as one is a former big league starter stuck in A ball until I decide to release him when the rookies come in.

      A-
      Victor Fernandez- 2B
      Len John- 3B
Lou Walkup- SP (What could have been had he not missed the entire year due to injury.)

      AA-
      Juan Carlos Ramirez- CF

            Single-A
            1. 1B Lonnie Bolden- he's my 4th rounder from 1982 (child labor draft). He's only 19, and is hitting .330 with a .420 OBP right now. He's going to be sent up to Lexington when the new rookies come in. He's from Columbine, which is an interesting anecdote.

            2. RF Mashige Ohayashi- He's a 3rd rounder from the 1983 draft. Ohayashi is a little old for A-ball at 22, but he wasn't ready for AA at the start of the year. He raked last year (.337/.384) and is raking this year (.320/.379). He's not a power-hitter but he will get on base. Like Bolden, he's getting bumped up to AA when the rookies come in.

            3. CL Don Saunders- He was a 12th round pick in the 1983 draft. He's done very well as the closer, registering 13 saves with a 2.55 ERA. He also has 30 strikeouts to 8 walks in 24 innings. He'll join the other two All-Stars in Lexington.

            Double-A
            1. 3B Doug West- He's hitting .316/.400/.484 with a .889 OPS. He's raking. He was dominant in A ball last year and struggled initially when called-up. He's a 6th rounder from 1982. I'm going to keep him at AA the rest of this season- my AA squad is the most competitive one and I don't think he's ready yet.

            2. LF Cesaro Moreno- He's an undrafted free agent who became available in the 1981 offseason after being cut by California. I started him at A-ball and he hit .331 so he earned a call-up last season to AA. He struggled a bit, but he's back to raking this season with a .344 BA and a .860 OPS. He doesn't walk much, which I don't like, but he's hitting the snot out of the ball. He'll stay in AA the rest of the season. Funny-note, before being cut by California, he was drafted in the 15th round of the 1980 draft by Hartford but never played an inning for the Whalers organization, being cut from the team on the day that the rookie class began that season.

I also have a 30 year old AA All-Star, but I'll ignore him.

I also think one of my starters got shafted out of the All-Star team:

SP Luis Miguel Gutierrez: leads AA in total strikeouts and K/9. He was my 3rd rounder from the 1982 draft. He has a 1.27 WHIP and is only 18 years old. The 5-4 record must have done him in because I have another AA All-Star (28 years old) who is 7-1 with similar stats. Too bad for Luis. At least he'll get to rest his arm!

                Very proud of my guys.

RF P. Parker was selected to the BLB Double A All-Star Game.

SP H. Ikebe was selected to the BLB Single A All-Star Game.
MR S. Perkins was selected to the BLB Single A All-Star Game.
MR A. Webber was selected to the BLB Single A All-Star Game.
CF B. Cavazos was selected to the BLB Single A All-Star Game.
SS F. Holdom was selected to the BLB Single A All-Star Game.

Parker was the fourth player I ever chose for the Denver Bulls. He doesn't have the ratings to be a great BLB player but he's been hitting in the minor leagues since 1982. Like my major league team, he doesn't hit for much power. But he'll get on-base.

                A. Webber was signed as an undrafted pitcher by Los Lunas and was released after 1983. He was signed to play on my A team back in December and has been a quality reliever throwing 46.1 IP with a 3.30 ERA.

Stu Perkins tore his rotator cuff just two weeks after being drafted in 1983 and missed the rest of the season. He's come back to throw 54 Innings over 24 games and post a 2.47 ERA.

Freddie Holdom was a 10th Round Pick last year and struggled off the bat. Despite SISA suggesting that his talent for contact dropped drastically over the off-season, he has collected .354 average and 19 doubles.

                  Good thread Clay.

                  For Baltimore....

                  Single A (A)
1983-13th round pick, 22 yr old, Willie Parker (C)
                  1982-13th round pick,
                  19-yr old, Dani Rodriguez (1B)
                  1983-1st round pick, 20-yr old, Ivan Garcia(2B)

                  1982-8th round pick, 22-yr old, Nate Hewitt(P)

                  Double A (AA)
                  1983-3rd round pick, 19-yr old, Rueben Bem(LF)
                  1982-9th round pick, 23-yr old, Ivan Munoz(2B)
                  1982-6th round pick, 23-yr old, Ty Miller(1B)

I've been waiting for Ivan Garcia to blossom and it looks like he might be starting. Also Ty Miller didn't do particularly well in AAA last year but he does well in AA. Hopefully, Pat Washington will be ready for the bigs by the end of this year and Ty will move to AAA next year.

                      Single A:
Brad Byers 1B. .338/.400/.871 line this year. I really didn't even know where this guy came from as he was drafted in the 9th round and put up a solid .230 line last year.

Jesús Delclos SS. Solid .291/.427/.835 line this year in Single A. He's a young 32 and consider him a Top Prospect in the BLB.

                      Double AA

Hamilton Remy SS. Drafed at 16 in 1981, he's now 20 and starting to put things together hitting .325 this year in AA. He's not a Top Prospect on the team but hopefully he'll keep playing well and get a magical ratings boost.

Dan McCain CF. A spry 29 years old hitting pretty well in AA. He better enjoy this all star game, he probably won't make another one.

Bill Graver Closer. He's definitely an all star closer posting a solid 4.50 ERA and a WHIP of 1.57.I love closers who let 1-2 guys on base every inning.

True...but it's not my fault. Now after 3-5 seasons and we still stuck...then it's my fault!

                            AAA are now up...

SP J. Montecind was selected to the BLB Triple A All-Star Game.
RF B. Legge was selected to the BLB Triple A All-Star Game.
C G. Cordle was selected to the BLB Triple A All-Star Game.
1B A. Latham was selected to the BLB Triple A All-Star Game.

I'm pretty pleased that not only did Cordle get selected to the all star game but got a ratings increase as well. I'm interested to see by how much when I get home.

The only Detroit Union (VIR) player to make it was Joshua Poling despite his injury. He was tearing up AAA and deserved it. He's been my lone bright spot at that level.
