Welcome to the first weekly (IRL) addition of The Farm Report… each week I’ll take a peek under the hood of the BLB minors and highlight what some of the interesting trends, studs and duds and big time prospect are doing while the big boys in the BLB hog the spotlight.

The Lineup:

Each week we at The Report plan to bring some inside information to the masses and spread some gossip about what we see going down in the bush leagues. You can always look for this information in the “Inside Pitch”.

We also plan to bring you a weekly report on the movers and shakers in the overall Minor League System report. Will newcomer Virginia strengthen their hold on the top spot, or will <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Wilmington put up a fight to regain their past crown? Check it out in the “System Report”.

In “Where are they now?” each week we plan to spotlight a player from the drafts of yesteryear and catch up with them today. Some may be bagging groceries, and some may be making millions… None can escape our reporters. Look for that to come sometime in the next few weeks.

“Prospect Futures” will be a section that will give a report on the biggest gainer and loser in the BLB Top 100 prospects. Look for this part of The Report to come out starting next week.

Finally, we also we spotlight the “Minor Leaguer of the Week”. It’s our opinion, so if you don’t like our picks… well too bad!

Now let’s play ball!

Inside pitch:

Insiders tell us here at The Report that three minor leaguers have constantly been grading out negatively in their talent evaluations. The three anonymous players currently play for Indianapolis, Los Lunas and Baltimore. Some scouts have each of these three slackers as failing three separate talent evaluations over the past two years. Time will tell if this trio can pick it up, but one more failed evaluation, and some scouts predict their skills could drop quicker than the demand for a Nate Magness rookie card.

Rumor going around the Windy City is that while their team’s future looks bright… their current system looks, well, static. In a shock, Windy City has not (at least to our scouts knowledge) released any talent hits/drops to the open public. We don’t doubt that Windy City’s scouts are doing their job, but one has to wonder… are they keeping mum on a big talent drop, or are they hiding a top prospect about to burst onto the scene? Time will tell, but for now, no news is good news.

Sources have posted a report on two Morgantown youngsters 2B Landin Clarridge and C Héctor Orzoco. These reports having been nothing short of glowing. Some say Orzoco has already impressed scouts twice in the early going this year. What most might not now about Clarridge and Orzoco is that they’re both products of the Maine organization. Orzoco who was drafted very late in the 1983 draft was immediately released upon being sized up by the Guides brass. Clarridge, who was drafted in the 1979 draft never really seemed to get going in his Northeastern home and was sent packing earlier this off-season, and this was even after a reported talent bump in his last year with the Guides. Of course, both of these players are lower level guys, but could the decision to release Clarridge and Orzoco someday come back to haunt Maine?

Starting pitcher Crispino Cumani of Syracuse has had a rough go of it so far this year. As of last check, Cumani is currently the only player in the minors to have already failed two talent evaluations this year. We’re not sure what to make of Cumani’s rapid decent, but after posting back to back years of 14+ VORP for Single A Erie, we have to think that it might be time to either move Cumani up or cut bait with the 6’2” righty. Sometime tells us a change of scenery would do him some good.

System Report:

Virginia takes the top spot in our annual System Report. This comes as a shock to some as Wilmington had recently dominated the top of the charts. Morgantown has a lot of work to do to help catch up their farm system with the rest of the teams in the league, but if the reports on Clarridge and Orzoco are any indication, they are well on their way to doing exactly what is needed to be one of the most successful organizations in all of the BLB.

Gonzáles, a 24 year old lefty masher went 11-25 for the week with 3HR’s and 9RBI’s. Now that’s some good hitting!
