Based on my drafting history, you probably shouldn't listen to me, but here's what I do:

I create Excel spreadsheets (I know, I'm a nerd) with all the relevant scouting data from my individual scouts (the game allows you to export this data, thankfully). I then come up with aggregate ratings based on this information, utilizing all of the info I have. I try to pick players early that all my scouts like, under the assumption these will be the safest picks. I mainly use the talent ratings for this (Contact, Power, Stuff, Movement, etc.). Of course, we all seem to have pretty similar lists using this method.

Finding diamonds in the rough is practically a crapshoot. There will always be a few guys that one of your scouts will really like that the rest of them won't. That player could slip a few rounds. There are also the intangible ratings, which the game manual says affects how a player will develop, though that seems to be an inexact science based on my research. But yes, the top rated guys will all be gone by the end of the 2nd or 3rd round usually and after that there's no telling what you'll get. In my case, all my picks have been awful.

First off... not to agree with Diesel... you don't draft for NEED per se in baseball because you have no idea what your need will be when these guys are ready to contribute. You'll over complicate and overthink it. You can draft for need with a broader brush... like... I have no young SP's coming up... so maybe that becomes a priority.... but I'm a bigger believer in (1) you can never have too many good players in your system.... (2) positions can change if you work with them in the minors so don't get locked into the "he's a SS and I don't need a SS"... (3) there's ALWAYS a ton of MR, Catchers and 1Bs.

Now, that being said, the scouts do make a difference and as someone who also took over an established team, I will give you a couple tips that might help that took me years to figure out. You don't need to trust all of your Scouts... but learn which one to trust. Yes, the more Scouts that agree on a player the better... but get to know your Scouts. Tip: Might work... might now.... send all your scouts to scout your Single A team (or AA whatever)....now look at the guys who are playing well (statistically) on those teams. Now look at how each of your Scouts see their potential. If he's playing really well, but some of your scouts still see him as a super low potential guy... I tend to trust his opinion a little less... especially when scouting the same type of players.

You guys write as if these are real players becoming fatigued by all that travel. Does anyone know if there is actually a home field advantage in OOTP and, if so, how significant it is?

Interesting thread OOTP does reflect the fact that hitters fare better at home and worse away. The question is if the reason is that pitchers are more comfortable with their mound at their home park, or hitters with the hitting background and vice-versa. It's probably a combination of the two, and OOTP reflects that...

We finally got Hiraki to sign and getting Frahill will hopefully help shore up the bullpen enough for our offense to help get us some wins. I just wish we could've landed LaRochelle. He laughed at our offer, so hopefully his arm falls off. Sorry Syracuse.

We still have some cash left over, so who knows what else will happen. I really need a starter, but theres not much left that i'm all that excited about, so we may have to pursue a trade. On the other hand, Gonzalez may be ready by midseason if all goes well at AAA, though he's progressed more slowly than I thought he would. We'll see.

As far as the draft goes, my guys seem to be all over the board, especially with the hitters. Actually, their in two groups. Two of my guys seem to be pretty excited about the same guys, while the others feel they are middle of the road prospects. I havent found a single hitter that I like that all of my scouts are at least close on.

SP Nakazo Sasaki is one guy that all of my scouts seem to love, so i'm sure he'll go pretty early.
