I picked up one of the 4 guys who will pitch on days when Don Stevens rests
Rich Mathes, who pitched to decent success with Virginia, blew out his shoulder last year and missed the entire 1983 campaign. He's a cheap option for me, getting what is basically a 1 year deal for 1.3 million dollars. He'll be an interesting story to follow.

I liked Mathes a lot, but didn't want to resign him before the Rule 5 Draft when I knew I didn't have a spot for him. Still had him in my plans for '84, but decided to make the move with Denver instead because Arredondo provides me a little more flexibility. But, I like Mathes... I'll be watching him.The Great One!
To many rings to count...

Is there any downside to bringing up a young player for Spring Training? Do they gotta go on the 40 man roster? Are we starting the clock on service time?WINDY CITY PLAYBOYS

Originally posted by Andrew View PostYes, they get added to the 40 man roster. It doesn't start their service time, but it starts their option years.
I got another young pitcher, the #1 ranked prospect in my organization expecting to play in majors. He got moved to AAA in the off season and hasn't even thrown a pitch in AAA yet.
If I don't move him up do I stunt his growth?
This is a good thing, but I got too much pitching!WINDY CITY PLAYBOYS

I think I'll let him play a little AAA ball and see. I might have to deal someone though, cuz I don't know how long these guys will be happy in the bullpen.WINDY CITY PLAYBOYS
