I just learned that my center fielder (.252, 26 HRs, 104 RBIs) wants 4 years at almost $19 million per on an extension. He's a good player but he wants more than twice as much as Keppel is making. I guess all I can do is hope he plays like he deserves a contract like that in his last year in Davenport.

It is a disappointment for me since resigning him was big part of my plan to field a decent team the next few seasons.

The same thing happened to me with Subaru Hiraki. He wanted $19 million a year and wouldn't budge. It makes it difficult to plan ahead when you don't know what they'll be asking for.

OOTP should allow extension at any time. That's legal in MLB, right? Why the restriction here?

You can't offer at any time? I know I offered a guy in the middle of the season and he re-signed.

I mean prior to the last year of their contract.

You can usually only offer an extension when the player is in the last year of his contract. I think some players will listen to offers when they have 2 years left, but this is rare in my experience.

Ghaniy would talk to me 2 years prior to his contract ending, but he's the only one I've ever seen do it.

So... this begs the question that we ask every year.... actually WE don't ask it, Diesel makes the same proclamation every year and it nevers comes true.... is this the year that a big name FA prices himself out of a job?

Nope. The FA class sucks this year, and there's always a few teams that think they can improve dramatically by throwing money around. History has proven otherwise.

Well, as one of those teams that tries to "buy it" every year in FA. Not this season. I'm out. I'm sitting on my $30.0. It's a youth movement in VA. I'll save my cash for a trade down the road if, by a stroke of luck, my team is any good later in the season.

I'll make a few offers to BLB guys, but no one that is going to cost me any real money.

Mediocre talent and over-the-hill guys who hit .245... the Bank of Virginia is CLOSED.

I think I've only gotten 1 F/A in my lifetime during the offseason, and he was a cheap MR.

Nah, we build our team. We don't have the big money some of you have. I can't even pay my own guys...or most of 'em.

I'm in what I consider an interesting situation.

My closer, Merlin Thompson, is 34 and making $3.5 million this season and next. He has two years left on his deal.

Out of curiosity, I try to offer him an extension. My thinking is, he's pretty cheap for a closer that's been more than decent. He's been close to very good. He'll definitely ask for a lot of money so let me resign him now.

He only wants $850k for one season.

I'm shocked. It makes me wonder if he's about to hit a huge talent drop that we just haven't seen yet because the new SISA report hasn't come out.

I still agreed because it's really not much money and if he's fine then he'd be a nice bargain.
