I would have been tempted to pick him first, if I was in that position. I don't think the dough will be an issue unless the owner has plans to go heavy in the FA market since most of the players available have low salaries. I'd maybe look to resign him with the idea of trading him to a contender for prospects/picks. I know the Davenport GM has a weakness with regard to parting with those if he feels the guy he gets can get the job done now.

I think Cleary is a great pick. Popularity could drive gate revenue. A great Closer will win you a few extra games. And, bonus, with the wildcard, more teams are in contention and great closer could get you a nice gift basket of picks/prospects at the deadline. Hell... worst case scenario may be you resign him and get 3 or 4 years of one of the BLB's best.

        I like the pick

I'm surprised Cleary wasn't the #1 pick. Granted, he isn't the same player he was in 1980-1981, but the guy still has a lot left.

            I agree.

the worst part is Andrew will take the extra 8 million in his budget and miraculously unearth three uber-players off the scrap heap that will suddenly get ratings boosts in Maine.

Not surprised to see Athley picked. He's for sure got a shot. We have too many quality SP prospects ahead of him, let alone 3 guys what all have or are close to having 100 career wins. This will be a good opportunity for him.

It's sad to see Qutez go, as I had high hopes for him when he was drafted, but he hasn't panned out. Although he is a decent catcher, has a chance to have a decent career.

Soleono was a beast for me after getting him from Maine. At worst, I was planning on having him as my 4th outfielder next year. Sad to see him and a huge utility guy like George Bowden go.
