  • 1983 Awards -- Pimp That Player Thread

With less than 20 games to go, chances are the guys who are going to be in the running for '83 Awards have already emerged. Time to throw some "heads up" out there so Voters could perhaps monitor your "Pimp'd" player for the last 3 weeks.

Feel free to Pimp your own players... or even your favorite player from another team.

The Virginia Colonials would like to submit two players for your consideration....

Dale O'Hegarty for IL REFRESHING NEW BREW

ImageO'Hegarty is not going to blow out some of the big bats in the IL R.N.B. race with the superficial numbers. O'Hegarty, who came over in the Joe Sargentinin deal, is most impressive in his versatility and ability to do all the little things in his debut season. While his final core numbers should end up somewhere around .280/.350/.390, he should play in over 140 games, hitting from the leadoff spot in every one. He should surpass 150 hits and score 90+ runs. He'll also check in with 30+ doubles and stolen bases and an impressive double digit triple total. Defensively, you'll also find him near the top of the pack in Assists, DPs and Range at SS.

Don't be fooled by sexy HR numbers! No Rookie in the IL made a bigger impact on his team than Dale O'Hegarty!

Martin "Eager Beaver" Carlton for IL LAST CALL RELIEF AWARD

ImageWhile not expected to win the Last Call Award in the highly competitive Import League, Carlton, who made his first All-Star appearnce in 1983, has been a huge bright spot in a cloudy Colonials' bullpen. Boasting an impressive 10.64 K/9 and a WHIP that teeters between 0.95 and 1.05, the little Texan with nasty slider has notched a career best 27 saves with three weeks remaining in the season. Virginia is starting to build a bullpen around Carlton and the additions of McSwain and the maturation of Errol Blue, could spell even greater things in the future.

For now, we ask that you recognize the rock solid season of Martin Carlton and consider him at a contender for IL Last Call Relief.

I know Andrew will try to say that Corrigan should be the top choice for the DL Pitcher Award but I keep looking at Lang and thinking he deserves a good number of votes too. I think it's tough.

Do you go for the guy with the lower ERA or the guy with the high number of strikeouts. That's pretty much the major difference between the two.

And screw Melgoza for taking away any chance at Chaundler or Seagarra getting New Brew.

Today's edition of the Dallas Morning News reports that Snapper rookie 1B Gil Melgoza was spotted cussing at young children and homeless veterans after leaving a downtown Dallas strip club yesterday afternoon. The children, of Fort Worth Girl Scout Troop 186, were downtown for their annual cookie fundraiser and politely asked Melgoza to autograph a box of Tagalongs. The vets just got caught in the crossfire after trying to protect the children and calm Mr. Melgoza down.

That being said, vote Frank Rancourt for DL New Brew! Frank's foundation, "Frank and Me," encourages rich local businessmen to donate to and spend quality time with orphaned youth and only employs Syracuse area homeless while paying 50% over the living wage (out of his own pocket). Each Sunday, unless he's on the road, Frank has the crew over for a home cooked meal which he prepares by himself, from scratch....all while hitting .295 with a VORP of 33.6!

Admittedly a longshot, Pat Reardon deserves a mention for DL Last Call Relief anyways. He's second in the DL with 39 saves, 7 behind Grant Lewis of Pittsburgh. But everyone in the top 5 other than Reardon, including Lewis, pitches for a team with at least 90 wins already. Reardon has only blown 4 saves all year while striking out 8.47 batters/9.
