You won't lose him. In MLB a player's contract is automatically renewed at the league minimum for his 1st 3 years on the 40 man and then he get's arbitration for the next 3 years. So they don't hit FA until the off-season after they pass their 6th year of service time.

Depends who you ask. There has been a bunch of individual testing with varying results. I like to look at stats at various level rather than the ratings on the whole myself.
