I released Toby Miskin like 2 sims ago and he didn't get returned to Los Lunas. He is sitting in FA. I also got charged for his contract which I didn't think that was supposed to happen with Rule 5ers.

I want to release Kelyn Horton back to Hartford's organization, but I don't want to get charged again.

    What should I be doing????

I think teams should get charged, say, $100,000 for making a Rule V pick. That might stop teams who aren't serious about the player.

I don't understand why you think you shouldn't be charged since you are the one who gave him the major league contract.

In MLB there is a $50,000 charge for any guy taken in the Rule V draft I believe. It may be beneficial to have this here as well.

Yah that's what I'm thinking as well. People seem to pick players with no intention of keeping them. It then screws up the team they came from because the Rule 5 status, where they can't be demoted from the majors, still applies.

Another possibly is to require teams making a selection to retain the player on their active roster through, say, June 30. That would at least prevent Rule V selections going directly from the draft to the trade block.

I did. I usually wait at least till June to make a decision. 1/2 a month isn't long enough to evaluate a backup player who gets very few AB's.

I think it's funny when guys draft Rule Vers then immediately put them up on their trade block.

I haven't returned a guy yet. I had a couple last year I thought about returning but never did.

                            Actually, yes.

However, this isn't the MLB, and you're still creating more work for Andrew.

I'm not sure drafting Rule 5 guys and then trading them is something many MLB teams do since the team receiving the player would have to keep him on their active roster for the entire season as well. Not many teams look to handicap themselves in this way.

It's much more common for the team that selected a player to work out a trade with the team that lost the player so they are allowed to send him down to the minors.

Either way, there's going to be some changes during the offseason to some of the Rule 5 and Waiver rules. I want to close a few loopholes and make the Rule 5 draft to be used how it was intended.
