You must evaluate talent differently than I do. I sure see more than a couple of FAs out there that I would rather have than Dupois (not that I can afford any of them). Or maybe you expect him to return to his pre 1982 form.

I'd love to see more than a couple of OF FAs better than Dupois based on the total package. Sammarano... sure. Dunlop.... maybe. I really don't see any others.

Furthermore, the point of my post, calling his 82 "crappy" just seems a touch off-base... especially for the IL.

EDIT: P.S. Clearly, based on my team and record, I have no ability to properly evaluate talent... so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

Yep. It has it's risks but if you're right on the reward is fabulous.

I'm banking on that with Hamlet. Nice 8-year extension at $50 million for the entirety of the contract. Guy is good for 25 HR, 100 RBI and a solid average. He could have gotten more in the open market.

I wish I had Zamarida before he hit arbitration because I would have done the same.

Just look at my starting rotation of Soto, Lang, and Dean. Look at their contract extensions. Look at their numbers. They are bargains. But that's what I gotta do to remain competitive with a mid-level budget.

For some reason I didn't realize that you were only referring to OFs; I problably misread your original post. Anyway I was figuring Dupois was below Harcourt, Tandy and Albors plus one or two relievers and even that 5 win starter you lost to free agency.

I hope you're right about your inability to evaluate talent correctly but somehow I suspect that your record has more to do with what you inherited.

OK, I might have exaggerated a bit. But when you post a sub .700 OPS at a corner OF spot,
your bargaining position isn't particularly strong. But hey, look at how much cash Andruw Jones got in real life after a terrible year. Like mahoney said, there are a whole bunch of guys with horrendous ratings that expect a BLB contract. At least I can respect those dudes for aiming high :)

The contract expectations for these guys must have responded to the exorbitant contracts floating around the league right now. I made an offer to extend one of my players nearing the end of arbitration to avoid this problem. It's risky, but there's no way I'll be able to play with the big boys in FA in the near future.

Albors may be THE #1 overpriced guy on the market for what you get. My opinion. Great glove. But the total package isn't $20+ to me.

Or is that just a smokescreen???? (menacing music plays)

Oh, trust me, it's me. Giggas was a fine owner and the thing that made those early days of the BLB go. Virginia misses him.

              • I have no idea why Albors is asking for 20+ right now. He's really not that good.

He became a lot better after we migrated to the new version of OOTP, so you can pretty much disregard his early-career stats. And I'm a firm believer that his glove at SS was a major contributor to the performance of my pitching staff. When you look at his ability to field three positions very well compared to the other top IFs on the FA market who are average at best fielding one position, I can understand why he's asking what he's asking.

                  • Albors was great for me down the stretch. He was looking for 19.5 per to resign with the Wildcats, but that was too pricey for our shallow pockets.

Oh well. I made my first offer on one of the "big names" lets see what he thinks. Besides him, there is another mid-level guy I am after, besides that....I will just be watching. :)

                      • Even the bullpen guy's asking prices are crazy. As an Orioles fan, I feel as though I shouldn't do as they do and give huge contracts to pitchers equivalent to Danys Baez.

I thought the same thing when I looked at his stats.

                          • So I signed Jonathan Brinkworth and his 42 year old ass to a 1 year deal. Sadly I'm excited to see if I can get one last good year out of him.

I'm shocked that guy is still around. He will turn 43 in March...I remember when I traded him to Davenport in 1980, I thought for sure he would be retiring at seasons end.

I don't have recent scoutings of his ratings, but it looks like the guy has fallen off. An ERA over 6.00 and more walks than strikeouts, in the IL? Maybe he can return to 1981 form.

Good luck on that one. I know he started last year for me something like 3-1, 1.80 ERA in his first 5 starts. You can imagine how bad he had to be from then on to get to an ERA of 6.00.
