  • Talent vs. No-Talent

Has there ever been a discussion of whether or not this league could move into having no talents/ratings displayed?

It makes sense now since the league is young in active owner years but I wondered if perhaps the owners would be interested in playing with no-talent ratings in the future.

Just looking for comments and opinions on the subject.

I would be against it. I like the system we have as it's still imperfect. But at least scouting still has some bearing.

I'd be against it also...we just changed how we view player ratings last offseason...lets just keep things the same. If it's not broken, don't fix it.

        How would you draft?

I like the system we have now. A little weird to say that since I didn't want to change at the time. Not sure how it would work with no ratings, what function would scouting play then?

Also, turning ratings off completely would pretty much eliminate the skill factor of the game and make it nearly 100% luck.

Wouldn't there be more skilled involved in evaluating a player by his stats? Right now we get solid numbers that tell us if player A has a better contact rating than player B.

Scouting would definitely need to go if you played with no-talent. And that would be a shame.

I've read in discussions that OOTP9 is planning to bring back Written Scouting Reports. Not sure how many of you played earlier OOTP's but those reports were great. If those made a return than it could potentially make scouts still valuable in a no-talent league.

I loved the written scouting reports. Hopefully they do make a return.

But you still haven't explained how we would do the draft.

I have some sympathy with your idea, however, because the scouts give information on things they couldn't possibly know - a player's strike zone judgement potential, for instance - but I don't see how we could overcome the problem of the draft.

I think leagues usually publish a league file that contains potential ratings for the draft.

I personally like the ratings system as it is now. I like using scouts because it makes the game more fun for me.

That being said, I'm always willing to consider any changes if people are on board with it.

Well, in the league I'm in that uses no-talent we have college and highschool level leagues that run in the background.

But in addition to that, like Andrew said, it publishes a report on potential ratings.

Potential is visible in no-talent leagues (at least the one I'm in). You just don't get a current talent rating.

Really, I'm not looking to challenge this league and it's owners. I was just asking a simple question on how people felt about a no-talent league. Obviously, no one is for it and that's cool.

You're having too much fun as it is anyway. Two BLB titles already and a 9 game lead in the division this year as well as two recent World Series titles for the Sox. Even the G Men look like they may get by the first round of the playoffs this year. No doubt the next thing you will tell us is that you are a Celtics fan. What a life.
