Take my club as an example.

I've never bottomed out with Maine. Not once. Our worst record was 76-86 in 2015. We've only been below .500 that year and in 1998 when we went 79-83.

And yet, look at my core players:

Voodoo Davila, first round, seventh overall
Dave Toste, first round, third overall
Steve Suarez, first round, 13th overall
Antonio Banuelos, second round, 39th overall
Andy Garcia, first round, fifth overall
Hector Gutierrez, first round, seventh overall
Jarrod Rowles, third round, 61st overall
Izzy Rivera, first round, 12th overall
Joey Long, first round, 8th overall
Ignacio Alvarez, first round, 17th overall

(A few of those guys weren't my picks, but most of them were.)

Almost any team is ultimately built with players who were high picks. Sure, when you're bad, you increase the likelihood of getting better players. But I don't think the advantage is as large as it's made out to be.
The difference there is your first rounders are spread across the age spectrum. 5 of your guys listed are really towards the end of the line. You have 1st rounders there from age 22-39. The heavy rebuilding teams like WIL have them (generally) age 21-28 all at their prime at once.

      Good point.

      Maybe you're right.

      What do I know?

I haven't bottomed out in a long, long time.

Not since the late 1980s with Pittsburgh ... though that team had already lost 90 games the year before I took over. So it's not like I tore down a good team to rebuild. The rebuilding had already begun when I got there.

In Philly, we were a 100-loss team right from the beginning. And when I left, the team was still pretty good and had Doorbell and Bluto. So there was no tear down there either.

Fuck. I've never done a real rebuild.

I'm glad May is over. Now June is more like Denver Baseball.

Thank you Washington. Please go away.

We will miss you, Carlos. Don't play against until August.

I demand more games against Denver, fewer against Davenport.

Although we are losing, Jimmy Cooper (SP) and Zack Cook (SP) are giving us a little hope for the future. Both have looked good and having fewer and fewer of those games where they get blown up in innings that give them a little trouble.

Also, recently drafted infielder Jerrod Baker won his second HS OBA Award. I'm really looking forward to seeing if he's the real thing. I rarely pick HS Stars this early in drafts so I have to cross my fingers.

I just realized that rookie Tom Farber has 103 at bats and 1 strikeout... ONE!!

That seems to be ridiculous for any batter. let alone a rookie that catches every day.

                          Holy crap. That is impressive.

And he struck out only 15 times in 427 AB at AAA last year.

I remember really liking Farber but then Batavia took him and I had to choose between Perkins and August.

The jury is still out on that decision, though Perkins is handling his own as a vsLHP bat.
