Understood but then what type of skills/ratings would indicate good ability to get a jump on the ball then?

Reaction? You'd think somebody with a high contact potential like Joiner he would have great reaction/timing. He also has high intelligence too.

I always had a difficult time deciphering how defensive ratings were constructed.

    • I have a tools scout and he comes as a 5-7-5-4-7 pot
Wonder why he doesn't play ??

Scout likes him, but probably is stuck in LF.

Like the variety in the scouts.

It's actually a lot more common than you think.

          MLB's post-1950 stolen base leaders

          1. Rickey Henderson — Subpar defender in left
          2. Lou Brock — Bad defender in left
          3. Tim Raines — Below-average defender in left
          4. Vince Coleman — Bad defender in left

Focus matters. Effort matters. Instincts matter.

Pure speed doesn't cut it if not applied correctly.

          • Joiner tempted me as well, but I stay away from high schoolers this early as a general rule.

Also I'm glad Sully is back. Now fuck off!

My scout has him as 7-4-5-4-6. But my scout is a drunk who frequents truck stops, God love him.

Excellent question. Should have been 8am, I've now turned it on as of 9am CT.

Thanks, Brad. I tried to turn it on but didn't realize I had to change the start time, so it wasn't working right for me. Now I know!

                        • Well I gave up a lot to move into this pick but there was just too much to like here. Ultimately I selected Joey Cook, 3B/OF from USC.

My scout loves him and I think he could be a really nice 3B instead of being wasted in LF, so his versatility, his power are both things we like and we're happy to add him.

I like Cook and I also had him pegged for third base.

Two years in a row Pittsburgh has traded into the top half of the draft...

I understand now why GMs hated it when I did this.

                              • Mini-apologies to the GMs who made offers for #14, but my guy is on the board here and I'm selecting him with the pick.

The Guides choose center fielder Dave Sliney from Florida State.

I may be talked out of this plan in the next several weeks, but the current intention is to have Sliney skip the minor leagues and make his professional debut as the Maine Guides' starting center fielder.

I'm not sure if anyone has skipped the minors entirely before. It's the plan here.
