Right now he's just an extremely well paid minor leaguer in my eyes.
It doesn't. I'm not saying it does. I'm not trying to put a financial value on his AAA performance.

All I've said is on the subject is:

    1. His AAA performance is incredibly good.
    2. umd should call him up.
    3. I think he'd probably debut on the BLB Top Pitchers list somewhere.

How much he's worth salary-wise is not something I weighed in on.

If you say, "His performance at AAA doesn't mean he's worth $25 million," that's fine. That makes sense and I agree.

But you and Carlos suggested his AAA performance means nothing at all. I think that's silly. I think his performance is indicative of him being a very good BLB pitcher who may or may not be worth $25 million.

Personally, I think any team that could have signed him, should have. Even if it meant using all your cash, lowering your PD and scouting budgets to do so. Doesn't matter if you are rebuilding, win now or somewhere in the middle. He helps all teams because he's so good and so young.

Sure, there was risk, but there is always risk when signing players to big deals. Whether it's a Free-Agent or a player on your team that needs to be re-signed. I would also feel safer committing this type of money/years to a guy who is 23 as opposed to 33.

Take Seattle for example: I entered the off-season with $5M in budget room. Had I known a player like Zhang would be available, I would have declined 3B Zachary Henne's $10.5M, then lowered my scouting/PD to next to nothing so I could make a similar offer to get the young ace.

Just think about him from a value perspective. There is probably less than 10 pitchers I would rather have than Zhang. And that's just because they are $280k/minors.

        And that's where we differ.

I'm not paying anyone that kind of cash without the data to support it. He hasn't pitched a single game and you guys are talking like he's the second coming of edited Pancho.

But both you and UMD are better than me at this, so that's just me.

I don't think I'm better than you at this. Nor is UMD. I understand your perspective but I see it differently.

For example: I see less risk signing Zhang to this deal than the deal you gave Talley. Not to say I wouldn't have re-signed Talley to the exact same deal but with his age/injury risk, it's a gamble. Talley is the better pitcher today but in another year or two?

You guys are much better at planning the long term future and this is exactly what this is.

I've got data to support his contract(Talley) so I'm comfortable. Zhang is the third or fourth highest paid player in the BLB and hasn't pitched an inning. I thought about signing him and at 17-18 MM, I take that chance. Just a bolder move than Id make.

Again that Not that UMD is wrong, but my scout doesn't like him as much AND no data points?

            No bueno.

              Hindsight is 20/20.

It's easy for me to say these things after seeing his prospect ranking, his AAA ranking and his Triple-A outings.

Ill take this a step further. This could work out for UMD in another way. A trade. I think Zhang is auditioning for some teams right now. UMD will find a team that is willing to tarde for him, contract and all, and he will get a ton for him.

I think Fajardo goes before Zhang.

Oh yeah. In a pitchers park, the pitchers league and a team culture of winning.

Ditto. I remember telling people privately that I was highly skeptical of what Zhang's ratings would look like after a few months of reports.

Its interesting for the league for sure. It might entice some big contracts from the international players in the future.

Impossible. We don't want any of those it seems.
