It used to be that the best players signed extensions, often below-market, to re-sign with the league's best teams like Pawtucket, Maine, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Washington, etc.
Now, those teams have to pay up to keep their players, and they can't keep all of them.
So we see non-traditional free agent destinations get involved, like Wilmington grabbing Bafford, Dallas signing Gomez, Hartford adding Perkins, an expansion team (Seattle) signing Dunham and Padilla.
Meanwhile, many of the traditional contenders, already sporting bloated payrolls, have been silent on the free agent market.
It's a positive development for the league.
The pitchforks always came after PAW and WAS (previous owner) for signing "team-friendly" extensions and such, when we all were guilty of it.
A glaring example for Baltimore is last year's Brewmaster MVP, Oscar Sanchez. After a monster season in 2012 where he finished 2nd in SS voting, I was able to resign the star outfielder to a near-criminal, 4yr/28MM contract. The contract he has now is probably more commensurate to his true value at that time.
If we had the cash to sign him at that price at that time he still would have been extended, but do we have the extra cash to sign other pieces to stay competitive?
Does he move so easily to a division rival if his salary is doubled and much closer to true market value?
These are the kind of questions that we have to deal with now that never seemed to bother us before.

I'm thrilled to get the Bafford deal done. Was it an obscene amount of money? Hell yes. Does he make us better? Hell yes. Plus it's a huge boost for the fan base to see that were actually trying. It was big game season and we bagged is a biggin.Brewers League Baseball

Make no mistake, it's a great pickup. Just take tips from Brad and restrict his base running and give him plenty of times.
Did I mention that I am glad you moved to the DL?
