Fun fact, we have twice as many complete games (14) than the next highest team (Pit) who has 7. Combine that with our 6 man rotation and the #1 bullpen and it's been an interesting recipe for our climb back up the standings.

2016 Regular Season SIM 19 Complete - Next SIM Sun 05/08

I'm really looking forward to seeing what Jimmy Cooper (SP) and Zack Cook (SP) can do next year. Although their aggregate numbers don't seem to tell the tale, these two young guys have been a HUGE part of our recent success. Both of them have outstanding control at 23 and 22 years old, respectively. Usually, that's one of the last things that pitchers "figure out," so it is encouraging to see them have so much success this early. Add in lefty Jaylin Bird, who has just thrown a couple of 10+ K games in Annapolis, and our pitching staff looks to be transitioning well.

The only thing that worries me is their propensity for injury.

My goal for August is to stay afloat and enter September within five games of a Wild Card spot.

(We're exactly five games back now.)

We play at Philly and Wilmington this week, then at home the following week to wrap up our Stout adventures against Baltimore and Washington.

The Stout is good. It won't be an easy two weeks. If we can win half those games, I'll feel satisfied.

Then things get interesting.

We have seven games left against Pawtucket.

The rest of the schedule consists of a mixture of Pittsburgh (.602, 3 games at home), New Orleans (.538, 3 games at home), Hartford (.525), Denver (.444), New York (.398), and Toronto (.263).

There are a lot of winnable games there. We could win more than 60% of them.

In the meantime, let's survive.

Listen I respect Z as well as anyone. God knows how long I've faced him, but you have to admit something is missing with the Guide. Chemistry is just so wierd in this game that can't be explained.

I've rarely won to win division titles with the Guides. Back-to-back in 2000 and 2001, then again in 2008 and 2009. Even when we won the pennant in 2006 and 2011, an Ale championship wasn't on the path. So I'm not sure division title is a good metric for us getting where we're trying to go.

Last year was injuries along with pitchers getting too old too quickly. Neubauer went from ace to to albatross overnight. Too much went wrong.

If my strength in most years is not being overreactive, this year it proved a liability. Here's what I mean.

— I felt encouraged by Robichaux's performance last season, enough to hand him the starting left field job. I apparently misjudged him, and I was much too slow in making a change in left field. If I had jumped on Patterson in April or May instead of July, it's a different story for us.

— Similar situation with Briggs in center. He's maybe the best defensive CF in the game. He had consistently put up a .600 OPS in Dallas, which was more than good enough for me with the glove. But he's been contributing an unplayable .400-.450 OPS for Maine, and I let him accumulate over 500 at-bats here hoping he would recover. Mistake.

— I let Edwin Guerrero start eight games to begin the season, even though my gut was telling me he shouldn't even be on the team.

— Recent bullpen additions flopped, despite no ratings drops. 6.61 ERA for Kym. 6.75 ERA for Knight. 5.00 ERA for Martin. Kym especially, as with the other mistakes, I stuck with too long, believing he would bounce back.

— Alvarez has a 4.32 ERA. He's never quite recovered from that injury a few years ago. He still strikes batters out and avoids walks and homers like he did before, but for some reason he hasn't quite been able to put it all back together and get the outs he needs to.

— Villarroel hit 18 homers in only 65 games last year, which sold me on him. When he struggled out of the gate to start with year, I stuck with him, probably longer than I should have. He hit only 2 home runs in 202 at-bats before I shipped him out this year.

That's the story of the 2016 Guides up to this point. If I had avoided a few of those mistakes, we're probably holding one of the Wild Card spots going into September.
