Not sure how much on an impact intangibles actually have on a player's development.
Top end talent is what it is. However, I think you have to look at players' entire career arcs to see the impact of intangibles.

It's so hard to know anything for sure.

Even if you make a guess and it turns out that you appear to be right, you don't know with certainty that the result happened for the reason you think it did.

Plus you have to account for survivorship bias: you remember the one high work ethic guy who developed but don't recall the five high work ethic prospects who didn't.

Plus, you have to consider that OSA simply sees him differently, not that he necessarily got better.

Work ethic has nothing to do with that, if he always was what he is.

Nothing is certain. Just like real life.

Remember Dontrelle Willis? Guy just flamed out.

          Oh, and JD Drew. Yikes.

I seriously need to cut down that image. No one will ever read what you post because it looks like fine print.

According to both OSA and my past scouting reports, he got better.

But you're right — maybe he was always good and it wasn't "revealed" to scouts and OSA until later.

Yeah, I'm sure it's a mix. A test could be run in a single player league, but Clay's too busy being better than everyone else at everything ever to help us out.

It's interesting what a difference a year can make for a prospect.

We drafted Pat Wood in the 8th round last season as a pitcher out of Stanford, where he started 10 games his last year.

He arrived in our single-A bullpen and was as awful as anyone can be. He stunk in every way. He walked guys. He gave up home runs. He didn't strike many guys out. He got smashed all over the field. 7.90 ERA in 10 appearances.

                    This year?

                    Completely different story.

He's thrown 42 2/3 innings and been a terrific middle reliever. 2.42 ERA. 51 strikeouts. He cut his walks almost in half. The home run troubles went away.

                    And his nickname is Biff.

Fun to follow these guys and watch them grow.

Love stuff like this. I was reading and thinking, oh boy who signed him? Glad you held on.
