    Force a mandatory minimum payroll?
I thought about this when we were discussing Expansion Draft Rules. My original idea was to institute a minimum player payroll for the draft so Seattle and Kansas City can't walk into Free-Agency with $100M to spend. This would also entice the expansion teams to draft those exposed over priced veterans that current clubs as desperate to get off the books.

There are a lot of positives to this type of rule. Increase in competition, no marquee players left unsigned, less tanking, etc. However, the big negative is forcing a teams hand. As we can see in the BLB, some teams are just fine with filling their roster with sub $1M players.

My guess is if we force a salary floor, then Pawtucket would made a loophole by signing a scrub player to a huge contract when he is in a tanking season just to accommodate the rule.

        Agreed.
I haven't looked deeply into all the available FA's, but I know I've been working to re-sign Golden.
I have no idea if this is even possible with '16, but it looks like was offering me a hometown discount with his 1-year, 2.7M offer.
If not for my cheapass owner, he would be a Mohawk right now.
I didn't even try to dicker (another gift) with him on the price.

Two sims later, after trying to shed some salary to make it work, his demands rose to $6M/yr.

He's 35 and clearly most teams have their closer situation figured out, so maybe there simply isn't a market for him.
Can't speak on other available players though.
I think we need to go through at least a season or two before we can judge if any changes are needed.

I like the concept, but a lower limit leads to bad deals as teams overpay mid teir guys to get to the cap and are then stuck a year or two down the road. Although not the same sport, that is the problem the NHL is having with a salary floor.

Well I can tell you that at the very least Baltimore and one other team have offered a bit more so that is why he's asking for more now.

If someone really wants Golden or Gibson or Rodrigues they'd offer them 125% of their demand and be done with it. I bet those guys would sign. Everyone is low balling them back and forth most likely using extra years or bonuses and they're yoyo-ing back and forth.

lol, lets never do anything financially the NHL does. its the only sport that isnt making money hand over first.

plus I hate the fact the Blackhawks have to tear they're team apart every 4-5 years.

I really only see three head scratchers:

                  1. Shinji Yamashita - He's too good to be left unsigned. He just turned 35, lead the BLB in saves last year while posting his highest K/9, lowest ERA and WHIP in three seasons. It looks like he's not even demanding a closer role (in expectations). There isn't a team in the BLB that he wouldn't improve or make sense on. Even on a rebuilding club, if he's posting a 2.00 ERA and a 11K/9, someone would give up a decent pick for the 2nd half.

                  2. Tom Gibson and 3. Henry Rodriquez - 35 and 33, respectively. Neither can field very well anymore, and are limited to DH or being a negative at 1B/LF. Because of that, there might not be a ton of teams that can employ them. However, they rank #12 and #17 on the best hitters list. I can't imagine a baseball league where two of the best players, neither of whom is fragile or ancient, not playing.

There are other guys who could help teams...but a lot of them are really old, fragile, asking for too much money, etc.

Give me money and Yamashita is on my team. I wouldn't even let it get this far.

                    Fits my ideal bullpen arm.

Edit. Note this is the same guy that gave Aten millions of reasons to sign in Denver. So you know.

Sure, its odd we have a league that a #12 and #17 arent playing. We are also a league that rain doesnt exist.

Rain exists. But our stadiums have retractable roofs now.
