I like scouting, but there are two changes I'd make to it if I could.

    1. Bring back multiple scouts.

In several earlier versions of OOTP, teams had multiple scouts who provided reports, rather than one scouting director who gave you reports.

It was nice to have three or four or five scouts out there who could get out on the road and do things for you.

It felt like you had a team of guys, and some of them you could count on more than others.

    2. No scouting in the offseason.

It bugs the hell out of me that scouts sometimes file devastating new reports in November or December or January or February.

It's like, "You were just telling me on December 1 that this pitcher is 6/6/5 with a 93 MPH fastball. Today is January 1 and you are saying the pitcher is now 5/5/4 with a 87 MPH fastball. What the hell happened between December 1 and January 1?"

There are no games being played.

    They're not in spring training.

There's no new information to base a report on, especially not a dramatic change.

And I hate how it impacts free agency.

There's almost always some veteran who had a good season and surely would have received a nice contract if not for the fact that everyone's scout comes in on November 1 or December 1 and starts talking shit about how much worse he is now that the season is over.

    Ugh.

What I have seen done is Potential Only which at least mimics this but keeps us blind from knowing where a player truly is. It's interesting when a guy is 38 years-old and you're deciding if he's still a 6 contact or if your star prospect has reached his 7 power potential.
        Completely agree.
Scouts, managers, etc, all rate players on a 20-80 scale and everyone involved will use that data, along with stats to determine if a guy is going to be a player.

I like it the way it is. I think there's still a lot of error in seeing which guys will be good.
I have a prospect who has 5/5/4 numbers and yet all he's done is put up sub 2.00 ERA's from A to AAA as a 23-year old.
So clearly I'd be ignorant if I went with ratings only.

But to be honest, I think I'd be completely lost if I had to depend on stats alone. The learning curve would be much deeper and I'm not sure I'd have the patience or temperament to go through the growing pains.

But, I'm a man of the people. If this gets voted in, so be it.
But I will vote against it until a DH is added to both leagues, haha.

No worries, it'll never get voted in. This league, for good reason most of the time, isn't big on change.

Crap, I saw Denver's combined Rookie VORP and was only relieved after seeing California's.

We were really bad this year.

A shame that Antonio Banuelos isn't even on the list for Stout Slugger. Only finished with a .380 average, 6.2 WAR, 66.5 VORP and 1.004 OPS (if that's your kind of thing).

If at-bats are the reason he isn't a viable Stout Slugger option, that's pretty silly of the utility. He obviously didn't need a lot of at-bats to be in the Top 3 in WAR and VORP.

Well I broke Statslab (for now until Andrew can fix it) so I guess we'll go with what we had. We had 22 of the 24...no vote from Syracuse and LAD.

Syracuse and LAD still have 24 hrs to vote before they get exiled from the league!
