Has anyone's scout turned out to be "right" about one of these guys yet?

What I mean by "these guys" is ...

      * Stats are average, at best, maybe even bad.
      * OSA thinks the player is not good. Mostly 4s and 3s.
      * None of the other owners seem to show any interest in the player.
      * Your scout thinks this guy is Babe Ruth. 5/7/8/8/7, or something like it.

I see a couple of these players every year.

I haven't actually drafted one yet.

Usually I figure I'll draft him in the 8th or 9th round. Someone else always takes a flyer on him first.

I follow the players from afar. I haven't seen one turn out to be any good. Usually they don't make it to AA. My scout stops thinking they're any good usually during the first offseason after they're drafted.

Wondering if other owners have this experience, or if they see exceptions.

My thinking was just that he's here in the 7th. There are guys my scout has matched OSA wise, but I know are no more than AAA or AA fodder so why not? I'm guessing one may break through.

Heitmeyer & Kincaid were late rounders my scout loved and so were a couple others I've included in deals. The chances of finding a Goto are probably less than 1% but serviceable role players are possible I think.

          • I'll spoil two names, since they're both on other teams now. Maybe other owners will want to weigh in.

B.J. Garrison, New York's 3rd round pick last year, currently a 17-year-old outfielder in A-ball.

            http://www.simgamingnetwork.com/blb/...ayer_2500.html

My scout at the time rated his potential something like 5/5/8/8/7.

Spectre grabbed him, and ... I guess he's doing okay, for a teenager playing occasionally in A-ball. He's not listed among New York's top prospects. I currently see no signs he is the player my scout thought he could be.

            Here's one from this year...

Dave Fredrickson, drafted by New Orleans in the 6th round.

            http://www.simgamingnetwork.com/blb/...ayer_3058.html

My scout suggests he has a future as a 5/4/8/7/6 player. OSA and stats are not entirely down on the guy. Maybe he has a brighter future than Garrison and others.

Regardless it's a weird effect to see a scout going out on a limb for a player showing few if any signs of greatness.

Maybe it's supposed to simulate a real life scout falling in love with a player.

It leaves me wonder if maybe sometimes that player really is a diamond in the rough that no one else saw, or if it's this dumb thing that happens that you can disregard.

So why spend a lot of money on scouting when this kind of thing happens? Why not just evaluate the talent on your own for free?

I don't spend much money on scouting.

One thing I wonder is, if you dump a lot of money into scouting, do you have a better chance of "those guys" actually being good players?
