    Maine prospect watch...

    1B Jayden Shockley.

Drafted in the 9th round, 212nd overall, of last year's draft.

    He immediately put up a 154 OPS+ at single-A.

This year he started with a 147 OPS+.

Given his ratings continued to develop, we called him up to triple-A for this next week of action.

Keep your eye on the kid.

After a really ugly 2012 I am glad Ian Moore is back on track with his 1st Round Pedigree, in AA. He found his "mojo" again and actually is one of the best hitters for the Beavers (AA) with .299 and 97 OPS+, 0.5 WAR, being outsanding with the globe +2.8 and 13 double plays... April was really nice for him. ST invitation woke up his hungry to play in the BLB with the Snappers. Now rated as the #58 Best prospect in the league. Hopefully he will continue with that growing tendency in May and during the summer for a late call up Chicago (AAA)

He was a 9th round pick so my guess is Z was an auto. He tells you otherwise he's pulling your dick.

There a certain amount of luck in this. (See SP Troy Donavon now playing for the Dinos).

Only advice is active = more chances of success.

I don't know about the pulling dicks part, but I think Z usually picks all of his guys.

I'd be impressed if he did, but my "luck" comment still stands.

That luck comment wasn't there before.

You ended with a statement about how Z enjoys pulling dicks.

I picked him myself. I don't pretend I thought he'd hit this well. I liked his superior batting eye and solid other ratings coming out of college. Good first basemen can go overlooked in the draft. He didn't get much playing time at Baylor. I thought I'd take a shot.

If you picked him, it isn't luck.

That's right. I eyed him too because of his eye but his work ethic putted me apart. This is why you are a contender and I suck :)

I picked through the end of the draft last year. I was finding guys with just as good of ratings as the end of the first round - just without the stats or "wordy" scout descriptions.

I think with the greater discrepancies in scout's views, there are reasons to keep selecting late.

Give yourself some credit. You're still finding your way and you're doing okay.

                              (Brooks trade aside. )

                              You're right.

The first round is where you find "consensus" players—the guys OSA, your scout, and the stats all say are good.

The middle round are where you find guys that maybe two of OSA, your scout, and stats support.

In the late rounds, you bank on what one of those criteria says and hope a couple lottery tickets pay off.

It's been like this for as long as I've been drafting.

The thing about drafting late is that if you go into it looking for stars, you WILL be disappointed.

But if you lower your expectations, you can easily get a guy that becomes a minor trade piece that gets you a big name or even just a stop gap for 2-3 years when your star retires or gets hurt, it keeps your team from bottoming out and having to climb out of the abyss.
