Files and reports up. I'm really sick and just don't have the energy to do the utilities now. I'll get to them later tonight. Sorry.

And there it is. The inevitable September/October injury that ends my season every year:

Gil Brummett diagnosed with shoulder inflammation, will miss 4 months.

It is always just a matter of time. I'm not really even surprised anymore.

Pawtucket 5.5 behind Pitt , 4 behind Maine. More importantly lost the Futures Championship 6-4 in extra innings. FUCK! Really wanted that 2nd championship.

20 games above .500, pretty sure the Wildcard is safe. Time to bring a few more AAA players up and lets see if we have one last run in us:

Swept the home series against Morgantown 3-0. Then traveled to Death Valley and got nearly shutout for two straight games then exploded for 13 runs to get one game in the series. SP Tyler Salzman strained his abdominals three innings into Game One of the week, then missed his start against Death Valley and will be out another five days. Fortunately despite his replacement P Jimmy Razza lasting just one inning on short rest, the hitters picked up the slack. Salzman has had a breakout year in his fourth season.

The Bats are now 78-58, three games up in the Stout and two games back of Baltimore for the #2 IL seed. Next up is a four game series at Wilmington and then we host Los Alamos for three. This should be a really good week facing off against two of the IL's worst teams but I probably just jinxed it.

In other news (I should write an article but I'm lazy) three DC legends retired this week, hanging up the cleats on the same day. P Travis DuFour, Troy Hanback and Tom Downs. The 39, 38 and 37 year-olds rank 4th, 1st and 9th in DC innings pitched. The trio were part of the three-peat teams of '02, '03 and '04. Downs, maybe one of the most unheralded players of his era, as the #3 starter had an ERA of 2.08, 2.17 and 3.33 during those title years. I am however a bit disappointed that I didn't call them up to the BLB when my roster expanded. They retired this week because they were all on minor league contracts and the season was over in Triple-A. I would have liked to give them all one last start the final week of the season (if I had my playoff spot wrapped up). Oh well.

Division is yours. We'll be lucky to make the playoffs with this injured group, but we'll give it a shot.

Not ideal. Split with Pittsburgh in four games, but swept in three so far at Pawtucket.

The three losses in Pawtucket were by a total of four runs, so I can't feel too bad.

One more to go at Pawtucket. Then six at home against Hartford and Indianapolis.

We lost Tony Perez on waivers to Batavia. Maybe it was a mistake to waive him. Claveau is a good closer. Toste is a good setup man. We have plenty of arms. We save a few bucks and avoid a clubhouse conflict.

Congratulations to our Triple-A affiliate Portsmouth Atlantics for winning the championship.

Losing Brummett sucks but I don't think it's a devastating blow to your playoff chances. How many more starts was he going to get? Four, five max? You have a deep six-man rotation and even if you decide to stick with the six-man you have a handful of options in the pen. Your main playoff competition, Batavia, also just lost a key piece of their rotation this week in Felipe Vega. I wouldn't waive the white flag just yet.

True, but it pretty much kills any chance (luck?) we had in the playoffs. Young pitchers (Honea, Fajardo, Clarke, Bourne) generally don't perform well in the playoffs. They have 1 career playoff start between all of them.

That's why I've always made sure 2 or 3 of my top 4 playoff SPs are veterans - Lindsey-Brummett-Pulido-English-Manhos-Wences-Torres - while the kids mix in and get some playoff experience.

We'll bring up Arnholt and see if we can catch some luck. We're one more significant injury from falling apart down the stretch here.

It's too bad, I really thought this team would be different when I put everything together this offseason.
