I don't know what I can do or how things went wrong.

Voodoo Davila hit .288 last year with 43 home runs. He's hitting .307 this year, but he only has 21 home runs.

We traded B.J. Mulcahy, our other former 40 HR slugger, after he fell off. We got Jimmy Jones in return, who was tremendous until he got hurt.

Frank Zamora, despite being a .340 hitter over the last few seasons, has been hitting a hundred points below that mark outside of Maine.

Enrique Zurita, a .730 OPS type infielder who one would think is in his prime, is sitting there with a .650 OPS instead.

                  Our youngest bats underwhelmed.

As Pat pointed out in the last sim thread, we cobbled together a group of misfits, including Dusty Simmons, Dave Willis, Robby Shumway, and now Al Hamilton. They've been reasonable productive.

We needed the main Maine guys to stay on course. It unfortunately hasn't happened. We're sixth in the Domestic League in runs scored, which when combined with bad luck, isn't enough.

But there are still five weeks of baseball to play...

Blah week, 2-4. We didn't hit enough (mainly because Gamboa didn't hit at all (0-16)). He wasn't the only culprit, but his line was the most egregious. Lindsey keeps putting up W's.

5-1 week. Keeps us 5 games up on Dallas who also went 5-1. Sully is trying to make me sweat.

We went 2-1 against California and then silenced one of the most potent offenses in the IL in a 3-0 sweep of Philadelphia.

Henry Rodrigues continues his absolute tear of a month in August. Still one day to go but as of now he's put up basically half a season's worth of numbers for an MVP candidate in just 29 days.

Another 2 home runs and 7 RBI now has him at 14 HR and 45 RBI for the month. He's overtaken Villaroel in RBI, is 4 back in the HR chase, and after leading the league with a .583 SLG in 2009, he's now at .600 in 2010.

We signed Isei Akamatsu to a minor league deal in April and he impressed us in AAA (0.81 ERA, 44.2 IP) to get a promotion. He threw 4 scoreless appearances this week and has sort of become my manager's go-to-guy late in games.

And of course I expected good things out of Schiefelbein and Robertson this season. They've been better than I expected. But after trading away Tamieke and Melgoza, we found ourselves in need of a fifth starter. I was confident I could find it in my system. I gave Leo Garcia another shot, for old-times sake, but he failed and has been released. Daywalt got a call because he's still owed $4 MM for the next two years, but he couldn't handle the pressures of starting.

So we called up a guy who did a nice job in his one-week stint back in late June. Pat Steffen.

Upon being called up to start, he threw 3 innings and got himself ejected and suspended for starting a brawl. That probably lit a fire under everyone's belly. He's been superb since. In his last two starts he's gone 7 innings against Baltimore IN Baltimore, giving up just two runs in 7 innings. Then went toe-to-toe against one of the IL's finest and threw 8 shutout innings against Philadelphia while striking out 10.

We found Steffen in December of 2007 after he became a minor league free agent out of the Hartford system. He ran through A and AA with ease and has been pitching in AAA for us over the last two seasons. He's earned the promotion and he's making the best of it. We like his potential so hoping he's one of those late bloomers at age 27.

Pawtucket 4-2. Wasn't feeling good going to Washington without Tony Infante and Tex Watts.

Its become pretty clear who ever ends 2nd in the Ale is going to get screwed, but thats life. We got a few more games against Pitt, we just need to play well.

Overall, I this year's squad was built with lots of new prospects and 5-6 veterans to lead them since I strongly believe OOTP handicaps teams built purely on youth. It actually worked better then I thought.

Now we just need to take it.
