Eh.
Pretty good week, all things considered. The two losses on the road in Los Alamos were due to outstanding pitching performances by Leo Flores and Evandro Dionsio. Sometimes you run into a hot pitcher and just tip your hat.
Losing Cardenas sucks as he had been my best hitter so far and his defense will be sorely missed the next two weeks at 3B and SS. In his place will be veteran utility Victor Sandoval and former Windy City Playboy 2B/SS Manny Saens. In limited duty they have hit .726 and .762, respectively. Neither is starter quality but hopefully can hold down the 3B/SS duties until Cardenas returns.
Five of my six starters pitched Quality Starts this week with only youngster Tyler Salzman getting roughed up. The 25-year-old has control issues and really relies on the infield defense to get outs (74% groundball). Not sure we have quite the defensive infield to help him out with Cardenas on the shelf.
This week Washington travels to Davenport (22-16) for four games and then to Death Valley (26-11) for three. A good early season road test against the Bock and Stout division leaders. With a good week, there is chance to overcome the 2.5 game lead in the Stout. With a bad week, we probably fall out of the #1 Wild Card spot and into a mess of IL teams with Carolina, Baltimore, Windy City and Batavia as realistic WC contenders.Wilmington Wildcats- 2057-
