2009 Regular Season SIM 24 Complete - Next SIM Wednesday 12/31
The man had 4 All-Star appearances in 7 seasons, 3, 140 OPS+ seasons and a New Brew to his name before he stepped a foot in Baltimore. Can you guess who finished Top 5 in SS voting in 2007? Oh that's right he wasn't playing Baltimore yet.
Earlier this year you said it Baiano, who is OPS .916 on the road now.
Last year it was Chiba, who is OPS .899 on the road now.
Its crazy that we are the only team that succeeds at home, but somehow we are still the best hitting team (by average) in the IL on the road? How is that even possible? The worst thing is that we aren't even the best "hitters park" in the league.
Your team benefits tremendously from having below average pitchers that can succeed in a pitchers park and Phillips Field helps out lefties. What's the big deal?
Pat's giving you a hard time, but I think you're both right.
To me, Wessel is a really good second baseman who is an elite second baseman when he's playing in Baltimore.
Saying that doesn't discount his production — it counts the same as any other. He has been outstanding for you and had other very good years in Indianapolis when he was younger.
Still, I'd be more interested in acquiring him, for example, if I didn't know your park helps lefties hit extra well and mine hurts their production.

It's really simple math.
My HR factor is .960. That's where it helps pitchers. Guys like Duffy would get rocked if he pitched in Pittsburgh...but look at Duffy's splits.
Your LH AVG factor is #1 in the league.
These are facts.
Wilmington Wildcats- 2057- Seattle Pilots- 2017-2041 Washington Bats - 1979-2013

I know. The discussions like this keep me vested in the league.

The thing is that there are tons of current stars and HOF'ers in the league have benefited from their park factors. But somehow Phillips Field is the only stadium where every lefty that succeeds gets an asterisk placed next to their batting accomplishments.
Kellum, Wallace, Kubota, Knight, Hamilton, now Chiba and Wessel.

That's an exaggeration, there are always the Colonials.

No, I hear you.
The challenge is that there's two perspectives for evaluating a player.
1.) Historically speaking, how good was this guy? What did he accomplish?
In my mind, Wessel ranks very highly there. He's done a lot of great things. Terrific player over the years, including this season.
2.) As a general manager, how good would this guy be for my team right now? What is it worth giving up to get him? How much would I feel good about paying him?
This part is where I start thinking a lot more about his age, salary, home/away splits, and park factors.
I'm happy for you that Wessel has been good for you, but for #2, I care about how much he'd be worth to me.
I spend a lot more time thinking about #2 than #1 because I mostly obsess over my own team.
