Can't complain about 5-2 against two IL powers. Hitting was awful except JJ started the season with a bang.

In contract news, I've never seen a closer ask for 28 MIL per year before. But that's what Stinger thinks he's worth. Ummmm, no.

        Opening Day! Hooray!

Not the best of weeks for Washington, however. Won two of three against Carolina, losing opening day in an epic 12 inning battle 2-3. Then traveled to Windy City where the Playboys won three of the four games by a combined five runs! Damnit. Competitive showing but already 0-2 in extra innings games and 0-2 in one-run games. Could be "one of those years."

Very impressive showing by the pitching staff. Hanback, Skinner, DuFour, Campos and Lewis have an ERA right around 2.00 or less. Bornemann got roughed up for three earned in 5.2 innings but Windy City is a tough matchup. Unfortunately, the bullpen has already lost two games.

It's a very small sample size but Rule V closer turned infielder Alex Otero has been mighty impressive. He's gone 3/7 with two doubles, three RBI, a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt. All as a replacement, pinch runner and pinch hitter. I don't expect him to hit anything close to his 1.143 OPS, but it's nice to have him contribute right away when I thought he might be carried on the roster as dead weight this year.

In other news, another BLB owner died...Washington Bats longtime owner Danny Martinez died of natural causes. Taking over is his son, the charitable and tolerant Tom Martinez. It's a tragic day and very sad loss for organization...but Danny wasn't very tolerant in his old age, so technically, it's an upgrade.

Very, very early in the year but an impressive showing by my minor leagues. 5-2, 5-2 and 4-3. My minors aren't loaded with Top 100 type talent, 11th ranked system, but I feel my teams are very deep with fringe BLB types, the guys in the 101-200 range. I also won't be receiving a big boost from many draft picks as I have traded away my 1st-3rd round picks.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: There is a shit ton of talent on the waiver wire! I see legit outfielders, infielders, catchers, starters and relievers worth claiming for a lot of teams. This is a chance to well, take a chance on a guy. I've had a lot of success with waiver claims over the years and feel it is very underused. There are some Washington players on the list worth looking at as well...

Nice way to kick off the season for us. Verba was great. Got good pitching performances from the guys I expect to do so. Even some good hitting from others least expected.

In the minors, Perkins is flirting with .400 again. Though it's too early to say he's going to stay there.

But we lost Eckstein for four months. That sucks. Not sure we will be calling him up this season with this news.

We got off to a good start too (5-2). Large part because Pawtucket completely laid down for us.

Hopefully there will be a few surprises in the year. I have no clue what to expect from some of these prospects I've stored away in my Minors for the past couple seasons. Looking to see what Moreno, Cole, and Dunn can do. Fate put together two good starts in a row, the sky must be falling.

5-1, I'll take it! Warkenten seems to have been the right decision. 7.1 Innings, just 2 hits in the win....

And then I looked at my Injuries, and Catcher Johnny Davis is injured for... 33 months....

Delayed diagnosis. It will be less. Hopefully much less.

Let's hope so. That'd be a career ender if I ever saw one.

Draft pool out. Waited for the Intl to show up (some solid 17-18 year old pitchers btw) but didn't sway my list.

We're basically down to 2 guys. As with any first pick probably won't move off the pick unless it really benefits our club.

In other new Pawtucket 3-4. Got swept then we swept. Interesting.

Pretty sure I know who the two guys are...but in my opinion there is a clear #1. Other interesting draft tidbits... there is a 7'1 pitcher who might not be done growing at just 17-years-old....there are two batters named Tom Grisso...my scout has only one pitcher in the top 16 prospects.

My scout is pretty underwhelmed at the lack of impact players in this draft. Lots of potential solid starters, maybe a few guys that look like they may be more. I do know who I'd take easily with the #1 pick but I'm not sure others would agree.

Agreed on the SP as far as an ace. There is none. By the time the pick gets to us it's gonna be dice rolling time I fear. After 15-20 it looks like AAAA/bench players only. I'm sure some will surprise like always and I haven't taken a really close look but on the surface looks like yet another underwhelming class.

A great year to not have a 1st-3rd round pick.

Just remember those with Minor League contracts aren't really Minor League contracts if they don't have options remaining.

If someone is claimed that had a minor league contact with no options left AND you want them back, he will be put on your BLB roster and 40 man roster manually and then DFA'd before the sim (because you have 26 or more players). That should give him a minimum contact and the ability for any team to claim him as before. This time though the claiming team will either have to keep him in the BLB or waive him again.

Please make sure though you have room in your 40 man initially for him to be placed there.

Took three of four from Cleveland after losing on opening day, and then was swept by a vastly superior Pittsburgh in the first "Sussex County NJ Series." (Not quite as catchy as "Subway Series", is it?)

We at least had a close 2-1 loss in the last game against them.

My team is broke so enjoy all that waiver-wire talent I hear is out there!
