Baltimore (IL-Porter)
What's New? Nothing much.
The Bulldogs are a bit cash strapped and if things don't look good early for them, its a 98% percent chance that there will be wholesale changes. The Bulldogs look seriously wounded after last year's injuries to former 18 game winner, Sadaharu Katsura and the BLB's #3 hitter on the Top Players' List, Al Hamilton. The Bulldogs did make one major move, acquiring 4-time All Star shortstop, Dusty Simmons, who was all but kicked out of Pawtucket.
Calling Card? Team Work
Mainly due to the roster management style of their GM, the Bulldogs have never really been a real star studded group. They rely mainly on the hope that the sum of their parts equal more than the whole. This year, the Bulldogs will need another standout year from Antonio Trujillo, who hit a personal best of 36 home runs in 2004. The Bulldogs will also have to hope that Angelo Barrios and Chad Reed both have something left in the tank.
Kryptonite? Father Time.
Al Hamilton: 33. Dusty Simmons: 32. Antonio Trujillo: 32, A. Barrios: 30.
The Bulldogs were 1st in the IL in hits last year, but was in the bottom half of the IL in XBH and HR. This is mostly due to father time catching up with this team and they just aren't able to muscle home runs out of the park at the clip they once could. Add to this a couple of untimely injuries and you have a team that just doesn't have talent anymore to be considered a good, let alone elite team in the BLB.
In the System? Nothing much.
To get where they were, the Bulldogs moved a lot of top picks in previous drafts. Therefore, there just aren't a lot of big names coming up in the Bulldogs' system. However, one name to watch is Danny Martinez, a future One Man's Trash post recipient who has won a spot on the BLB roster after a solid spring training campaign.
Position Battle to Watch? None. We're Set.
There really isn't much to talk about here. Not too many battles going on although it may get interesting once Hamilton comes off the DL.
Magic 8-Ball Answers: Will the Bulldogs make the Playoffs?
Not likely. They will be lucky to be over .500. The Bulldogs have a lot of guys that are past their primes offensively so they'll need a lot of weight to be carried by the next generation of starters in Baltimore starting with Todd Taylor and Rueben Mendoza. Mendoza may struggle a bit this year, but look forward to Todd Taylor showing his ability and appearing on the Top Players' List before the season ends.
Projected Finish: 4th Place in the Porter, 78-84 and missing the playoffs. Our record would be better but we'll be out of it early so I'll probably sell off a lot of pieces.
