    Baltimore (IL-Porter)

    What's New? Nothing much.

The Bulldogs are a bit cash strapped and if things don't look good early for them, its a 98% percent chance that there will be wholesale changes. The Bulldogs look seriously wounded after last year's injuries to former 18 game winner, Sadaharu Katsura and the BLB's #3 hitter on the Top Players' List, Al Hamilton. The Bulldogs did make one major move, acquiring 4-time All Star shortstop, Dusty Simmons, who was all but kicked out of Pawtucket.

    Calling Card? Team Work

Mainly due to the roster management style of their GM, the Bulldogs have never really been a real star studded group. They rely mainly on the hope that the sum of their parts equal more than the whole. This year, the Bulldogs will need another standout year from Antonio Trujillo, who hit a personal best of 36 home runs in 2004. The Bulldogs will also have to hope that Angelo Barrios and Chad Reed both have something left in the tank.

    Kryptonite? Father Time.
    Al Hamilton: 33. Dusty Simmons: 32. Antonio Trujillo: 32, A. Barrios: 30.
The Bulldogs were 1st in the IL in hits last year, but was in the bottom half of the IL in XBH and HR. This is mostly due to father time catching up with this team and they just aren't able to muscle home runs out of the park at the clip they once could. Add to this a couple of untimely injuries and you have a team that just doesn't have talent anymore to be considered a good, let alone elite team in the BLB.

    In the System? Nothing much.
To get where they were, the Bulldogs moved a lot of top picks in previous drafts. Therefore, there just aren't a lot of big names coming up in the Bulldogs' system. However, one name to watch is Danny Martinez, a future One Man's Trash post recipient who has won a spot on the BLB roster after a solid spring training campaign.

Position Battle to Watch? None. We're Set.

There really isn't much to talk about here. Not too many battles going on although it may get interesting once Hamilton comes off the DL.

Magic 8-Ball Answers: Will the Bulldogs make the Playoffs?
Not likely. They will be lucky to be over .500. The Bulldogs have a lot of guys that are past their primes offensively so they'll need a lot of weight to be carried by the next generation of starters in Baltimore starting with Todd Taylor and Rueben Mendoza. Mendoza may struggle a bit this year, but look forward to Todd Taylor showing his ability and appearing on the Top Players' List before the season ends.

Projected Finish: 4th Place in the Porter, 78-84 and missing the playoffs. Our record would be better but we'll be out of it early so I'll probably sell off a lot of pieces.

Have you chosen to cancel 6 games this season due to lack of interest?

Something told me the splits didn't look right.

Plus Spot is still struggling to count to ten using his Single A team.

            Pawtucket (DL-ALE)

            What's New? A few tweaks.

Gone are RP Ole Mens, 3B Dusty Simmons, 1B Jon Montalvo, SP/LR Romano Jacopino, C Thang Mac. New for 2005 1B Baltesar Babilo, SP/LR- Willie Gomez, C Pat Gould. Gould we consider a defensive upgrade as Mac's defense skills were quickly eroding. Also we can now have BOTH catchers in the linup during various matchups so flexbility a real plus! Babilo we think can replicate Jon's 2004 numbers. Long term Jon will be the better player, but for this one season should be ok. Willie Gomez starts the season in AAA to figure things out. We've been highly successful doing this with bottom rotation guys (Aparicio started 04 in AAA) and we believe he will outperform Jacopino's number by midseason. Simmons I'm sure can still do it, but his contract really was a pain and his production no longer justified him. Jimenez will be fine at 3B and his flanked by a back to back DWI winner at SS.

Calling Card? Can matchup with anyone

This group of Patriots is very flexible and balanced unlike the 90's cast that was unbalanced and used home field to shelter its flaws. Want to throw righties at us?? Sure go ahead, we have the lefties to handle it. Come at us with a lefty heavy lineup? Fine expect least two lefty starters that series and 3 more waiting in the pen. Not overly talented with just two top players at each the hitter & pitching spots, but a good mix here. Gonna miss some of these guys as Pawtucket starts looking ahead to 2012.

            Kryptonite? Age/ Pittburgh.
Looking back at 98-99 I saw this monster coming. Pittsburgh total system was at an INSANE 304 pts. Our system in the meantime, we sat around the 75-80 range. It was that point was decided instead of trying to match them with prospect building, figure out a youth core, move the ones that were going to take too long to develop for players in they're prime and steal a few divisions before the beast grew up. Well fast forward to 2005 and short of a Brewmaster championship we really did accomplish our goal. With that, time is running out. Maine is there also. Nothing against them, but they can cause issues for the wildcard race. Talent wise, not at Pittsburgh's level. Maybe its our team destiny to play well early in each decade??

In the System? Lee and a bunch of young kids.
Jimmy Lee looks ready. Had a great spring and his ratings are rounding out. Needs some defense seasoning, but he will get there. Will he play for us? Not likely. No real roster spot for him at this time, plus already talking to a few teams about moving him. Sorry kid, just wrong timing I guess. By design, wont see 1B- Antonio Banuelos or C Todd Robideau for years.

Position Battle to Watch? Maybe the #5 spot, but it tends to be a matchup thing.

We generally go 5 man rotation, but will use a 6 on long runs without a day off. Cardenas might push Jimenez if he struggles early. Look for Dave Miller to get increased playing time also.

Magic 8-Ball Answers: Will the Patriots win a 4th straight division??

No. Wild card....could. The injury to Wildfire certainly helps, but expecting Maine, Indy & Myself to be fighting for this final spot. Not saying the division is out of reach, but going with my gut on this one. That 8 game choke was real bad, that can't repeat can it???

Projected Finish: 2nd Place in the Ale, 94-68. Playoffs 50/50 this season.
