SIM 2
Washington Bats- 7-5; 1/2 GB
After starting 5-1, the Bats lose bother series 2-3, falling back to 2nd in the Stout at 7-5.
The Good
-2004 Rule V draft choice SP Pat Powell made his debut as a starter this week after a brief relief appearance the opening week. Against Philly, he pitched 8.1 innings, 5 hits, 2 ER, 6 strikeouts in a 3-2 win. I really like this kid. Former 17th overall pick in 2000, I was shocked he fell to me in the Rule V. If he can avoid the long ball, he should be able to survive at this level despite skipping Triple-A.
How about SS Cy Gray? He is currently on pace for 27 homeruns and 176 RBI. Obviously with career highs of four HRs and 56 RBI, he won't even sniff half of those numbers, but right now he is crushing it. I think he likes hitting in the #9 hole, after the pitcher.
The Bad
Already made my first "benching" of the season. OF Willie Garcia has been demoted to #5 OF from starting LF. In his place, OF B.J. Jobe returns to the starting lineup and OF Toby Day will be the top backup. Not huge news, as I expected all three to platoon for time with the OF depth this team has.
The Ugly
Anytime Wilmington is in first place, it looks ugly.
Next Week
Stout Week! Three @ Death Valley and three @ Wilmington. I'm expecting good things. I'll say a sweep of DVS and 2-1 against the Blue Wave.
The Minors
I'm interested to see how accurate the new minor league system report is. I'm seeing a lot of guys that are projected to be ready for the next level that I wouldn't have expected to see so early. Might wait it out a little.
