Just an update, but I'm picking up the team option on Trujillo. So, that settles that.

1. How did your season go? Highlights? How did you trades work out? How did the signings go? Did you meet or exceed expectations?

The Muckdogs had their first winning season since 1997 as we finished 85-77 but still 4th in the Porter. The main issue we had this year was against our Porter foes where we posted an 8-13 record against Baltimore and Cali, and an 8-12 record against Philly. Even going a game over .500 against each of those three changes the landscape of the division.

The highlight of the year was SP Willis Gomez. After a torn labrum kept him out of AAA last year for 5 months he came back and went 0-2 with a 2.93 ERA to finish out the season in the BLB. Wondering how he would recover in '03 he pleasantly surprised with a 16-6, 3.00 ERA, 1.19 WHIP campaign. We don't think he will be the superstar we once thought but we hope he can be a solid #3.

The next tier down highlight would be C Bill Hardwick. Both Gomez and Hardwick came over in the same trade with Syracuse and for a few seasons we thought Bill might not be our answer at catcher. This season he posted his best numbers for every main category as he hit .263/.358/.468 with 22 HR's, 68 RBI's, and 11 SB's. He also threw out 44.6% of runners, good enough for 3rd in the BLB.

We traded for several players this year, most notably Travis Wyatt and Doug Gill. Wyatt was traded for late in 2002 and after starting in AAA this season was called up on 5/6/03. He responded by hitting .303/.380/.581 with 18 HR's, 51 RBI's, and 5 SB. Our scout thinks he has impact potential with the bat and at 25 years old we are very excited about his future.

We met and exceeded our own and our owners expectations. Our budget went up several million and we believe we have turned the corner after the disastrous downfall in '98 which bottomed out with a 45 win season in 2000.


2. Off-season plans? Players on the trade block? Big needs or targets for Free-Agency?

We are teetering between holding the course and going full speed ahead. We don't see a huge decline in any other Porter team for a few seasons to come so holding the course seems to be winning out.


3. Early expectations for next year? Any big names coming up? Any big names being shown the door?

We'd love to win 90 games next season but I'm not sure if we're ready for that jump. If Doug Gill actually plays like our scout thinks he can we might make it. He hasn't shown that ability the last few seasons but we picked up his '04 option just in case he decides to play to his potential.

Our biggest name coming up will be SP Danny Gonzalez. Picked #9 in the '99 draft he has won POTY in AA and AAA the last two years respectively. Behind him will be SP Ron Burton and SP Joey Bertin who will move up to AAA and might make the jump if things work out. If SP Diego Martinez improves his control those four will make a pretty formidable rotation when combined with Gomez, Farq, Rivera, and Pat Olson who is currently in AAA. Obviously we can't have 8 SP's in our rotation so we will be looking to trade for eventual pieces but for now we're just watching them develop.

One thing I don't like about new statslab is the fact that on player pages you no longer can see career rank under each stat. We used to be able to see their rank below the career numbers... now it's gone.

Excited to get Free-Agency underway. Also hopeful I get one of my short list of Rule V picks.

Bats only have a little over a million to spend but I think we can get creative.
