  • 2003 Awards Talk

It'll be time to start voting shortly for season awards. Feel free to hold discussions here between now and the final vote being cast.

The IL Stout Slugger race is just nuts with Fuji, Caplan, Reed, Gaston, Barrios, etc. just tattooing IL hurlers this season.

Same for the IL Pale Ale. There's some really fine seasons being turned in by some really good young pitchers (DuFour, Downs, Mejia, Keifer, Katsura, Burns . . .the list truly goes on and on).

It's the Virginia 9 Effect I suppose. Those numbers get distributed more evenly across the league.

Probably the first time in years that I don't think I'll be bitter about who wins the awards. Reed has been amazing but only against RHP. Barrios has been Fujii Lite for us. Caplan is absolutely dangerous. But I think its not really close. Fujii is just sick.

So mad I didn't have the balls to flash the cash with him.

I'm mad he didn't take my offer during FA1 that year. I ponied up some "ridiculous" (seemed so at the time) 7yr/$17per type deal halfway hoping he would save me from myself and not take it, but also fairly sure that he would. He sat on it for one SIM then Linty blew our offer out of the water.

Fuji has a Virginia like hold over the IL for years to come. I demand an investigation.

          And in the DL...
Yamamoto(NO) is an absolute beast. I think he homered in 3 straight games against us, twice. Incredible season.

I like what Bryant(Indy) did this season, injured or not, he's leading in a lot of categories. Maybe the Win totals give a few votes to some other pitchers but he should be a lock.

Victor Rivera (PAW) for president? The guy was filthy all year. Maybe he would have more saves on a less offensive team? Wouldn't matter anyway with that ridiculous ERA he had.

The only minor question in my mind is the New Brew race. Lona(LA) or Montalbo(PAW), balance vs power. Even in a stacked lineup, 35 HRs is a huge accomplishment. Lona had a great season as well, leading LA in some areas but this isn't who meant more to their team voting.

The DL Pale Ale I think is our most competitive though in the end 'Wildfire' is probably the logical choice.

I mean, the guy will still lead in most categories (including strike outs) and hasn't even pitched in 3 weeks. Be a nice award figuring the severe ratings hits coming be a nice parting gift for the kid.

Not in front of the game so, who are our ROY candidates? Although Stratman is ballin' in Baltimore, his sample size is likely too small (TWSS).

In no particular order (forgive me if I miss someone after a quick glance):

                    1B Hector Feliciano - MOR
                    OF Troy Hart - MOR
                    SP Willis Gomez - BAT
                    2B Jaime Hoffman - BAT

A few other guys who probably don't have enough AB's to be considered, but still had good years: W Garcia - WAS, T Wyatt - BAT, etc.

I really liked Feliciano at the beginning of the year. Honestly I never can understand why Morgantown isn't a top team. The always look good on paper.

Never has "both" sides of the coin together. They can either pitch or hit. For years they had great pitching with no hitting. Now, reverse it. Bad timing?

Edit: nevermind, they can't hit either. .242 isn't going to get it done.

                        Cursed?????

No one even comes close to Gomez for rookie pitchers...and he currently sits #2 overall in the IL for wins. Hard to go against Feliciano who hit 30 HR's though.

Hopefully Danny Gonzalez can repeat his performance when we call him up next season. Kid just won the AAA POTY after winning the AAA POTY last season.

Now that the season is officially over time to pimp:

DL Stout Slugger- Tyler Quinn. Leads in virtually every power category we have in the DL (and even the BLB). For Christ sakes, he even lead in triples with 22 stolen bases to boot. Finally, consider Pawtucket's homefield modifier and this becomes a no brainer.

DL- New Brew- Jon Montalvo. Funny with all our power hitters over the years no one really won this award. Figures the 3rd rounder ends up having the best chance. Lets see..... 38 homeruns, 121 rbis, .551 slg% all #2 in the DL behind Quinn, ops'd at .884. Ok, I'm done writing just vote for him.

DL- Last Call- Víctor Rivera. #2 in saves with 40. Saves are cute, but its a terrible way to vote for a player. 0.94 ERA/ NO homeruns/ 9 walks & 71k's is how you need to vote. Again, just get it done.

DL- Pale Ale- Tyler Gerard. Probably the hands down #3 vote getter. 19-4 and his walks for the season are nuts at 26. Sadly, didn't get win 20 and will never be flashy with strikeouts. Still, votes will be nice.

FUNCLOWNS SEXY MAN AWARD- SP Tom Vaccarella. Ok, this isn't really an award but lets just call it comeback players of the year. 14 month arm injury, came back after 1/3 of the season going 14-3/ 2.75 era/ 31.7 VORP. To bad he couldnt qualify for New Brew cuz of being hurt while on the BLB roster. Might of actually won it.

I'll do a write up on GM of the year later. (Ughh, hate who I have to give props to this season)
