  • High Pitch Counts

    Some of these are absurd...
    Check out Chavarraga for Dallas:

He also threw 135+ in his first two starts.

You can set pitch limits to each player in the strategies tab. but yes, I agree, the computer AI tends to leave players in too long.

Yeah, I'd say 197 is a little too long...

Easiest way to fix this is just have terrible pitchers. None of my guys get out of the 4th inning on most days so we keep them fresh for the rest of the season.

One more thing, wait to see how it handles your pen when you starter gets rocked. Look what the computer did in this game to my closer. I was pretty thrilled having my closer in that long.

I've set pitch count limits for all of my starters. Perhaps everyone should think about doing the same? If the game isn't going to punish a guy for throwing 450+ pitches in 3 games, then something is wrong.

One thing I can do is lower the "pitcher endurance" setting and see what happens. It's set to 'normal' right now but the default for their MLB quick start was 'very low' I'll do some testing on low and very low today to see if this helps at all.

In the meantime, I would suggest setting pitch counts for all your pitchers. I'd say anywhere from 100-120 for starters and maybe 30-40 for your closers and relievers.

I have a big problem with how they use pitchers, which is hopefully something they'll look at soon since they said AI will be a priority. There's no reason my #1 setup man should pitch 3+ innings after my starter lets up 5 runs in 2 innings. I wish there was a setting to only use them in close games or if I have the lead. This could be partly my fault though, since I don't have anybody listed as a mop up reliever.

I've had zero problems with high pitch counts.

Are you guys messing with your team strategy sliders? I really haven't changed them. Just slowed the hook in innings 1-3. I did put a couple guys at 120 pitch limites. Maybe we should just have a league rule that 120 pitches is the max?

My #1 starter has topped 140 twice in his first 3 games. I adjusted the strategy settings some, giving him a slower hook, but will probably adjust that back down.

In a test, I set the endurance to 'very low' and that seems to have curbed it some. The highest pitch counts I saw were in the 120's and most starters (who didn't get shelled) were in the low 100's. I still saw some instances where closers pitched 3+ innings though. I'll probably set a pitch count on my closer and setup man as well, just so they don't wear themselves out and are available to pitch more days.

Also, I think a good idea is to move somebody (maybe your 3rd MR) into the mop up role as well.

EDIT - I set enddurance to very low, not very high

Here are the results of a test I did using the new setting and assigning pitchers to the mop up role:

                        lost 1-0
                        starter: 7.1, 114
                        #1 setup: 1.2, 18

                        won 12-3
                        starter: 7.1, 129 (130 pitch count)
                        #1 setup: 1.2, 16

                        won 8-0
                        starter: 9.0, 121

lost 6-4 (my 4 runs were scored in the 8th)
                        starter: 3.2, 82
                        #1 mop: 3.0, 47
                        #2 mop: 1.1, 21

                        won 11-1
                        starter: 8.0+, 125 (took a shutout into the 9th)
                        #2 setup: 1.0, 23

I'm wondering if setting a pitch count makes it so they pitch to that number unless they're getting shelled. The only pitcher on my staff that had a pitch count threw more than anybody else. I have no problem with the two guys going into the 120's going for the shutout. I'm going to run the same set of games again and post the results.

Nope. My top pitcher is set to 120 pitch count. In his last game they pulled him for a PH in the 7th. And he was pitching great, tied 1-1.
